JOSS

1966 – The JOHNNIAC Open Shop System (JOSS) was taken down by the RAND Corporation. JOSS was set up to relive bottlenecks in programming batches and was based on the von Neumann architecture. This machine was noted for being used continuously from 1953 to 1966. Eventually, newer ideas pretty much took JOSS to the limit and the computer would start to be a big bottleneck. Eventually, JOSS was taken offline indefinitely.

JOHNNIAC stands for the John Neumann Numerical Integrator and Automatic Computer.

Collabra Software Inc`

1993 – Collabra Software Inc was Incorporated by Eric Hahn. Collabra was short for “Collabrative” and developed and marketed computing applications that allowed for information sharing. Collabra Share was their flagship software which created group conferencing to email. The company coined the term “groupware”.

The company was acquired by Netscape on November 9, 1995 which Collabra Server was ultimately used in Netscape Navigator browser. Hahn eventually became CTO of Netscape, but left to co-found Lookout Software, which was acquired by Microsoft. Hahn also had cc:Mail, which was acquired by Lotus 1-2-3.

John J Carty on the first coast-to-coast broadcast

1924 – General John J. Carty  spoke in Chicago, but his voice was heard around the United States. This was the first ever Coast-to-Coast broadcast. Only 10% of Americans had a radio and many states missed the broadcast, but it was expected that millions still heard the broadcast.

The broadcast stretched from San Francisco to Providence, Rhode Island then down to Havana, Cuba via submarine cable. A couple independent receivers picked up the broadcast in Texas.

This ushered in the Golden age of Radio as people had a voice across a continent for the first time. Radio production and market share rose as President Coolidge and baseball teams started to use coast-to-coast broadcasts on a regular basis.

The abort system had two basic control modes, “attitude hold” and “automatic.” In automatic, the computer would take over the guidance and start looking for the command module, which was certainly not what the crew intended to do at that moment. While correcting for a minor yaw-rate-gyro disturbance, the astronauts  accidentally switched the spacecraft to the automatic mode, resulting in frantic gyrations.

Since I use Wirecast and Vegas 14, I needed a good program to create titles and lower 3rds for my videos. Two years ago I was introduced to NewBlueFX and Titler Pro software. This has completely changed how I have created content online.

I’ve been using their newest version – Titler Pro 5 – for a while now. The first couple revisions had some bugs to them, but once they got straightened out, I was able to use without issue. I loaded up on my main desktop, along with my travel laptop to create videos for CES, NAIAS, and NAMM.

What is Titler Pro 5?

This is stand alone software that can create and edit titles, lower 3rds, and other graphics for your videos. You can make a title from scratch, or simply use one of the templates to build upon.

Titler Pro does work with software like Magix Vegas 14, Wirecast, Adobe Premiere and After Effects, Final Cut Pro X, HitFilm, Avid Media Composer, and Grass Valley EDIUS. The stand-alone version allows a person to focus on building titles, then bringing them into your videos after.

Changes in Titler Pro 5

The biggest (and most needed) change was the overhaul of the interface. The new app allows you to easily add, adjust, and even transition your objects with little issue. Creating a simple lower 3rd is easy to do and can be completed within minutes.

Titler changed the workflow by how it caches the workspace. Sometimes you would get stopped when you made a change waiting for the program to catch up.

If you have multiple titles, you can adjust as a shared or unshared group. That means if you need to move over some text because it is longer, it will not affect the other titles unless you share the title.

Moveable workspaces allow you to set up the window the way you want. When you choose an item, the proper windows and settings will now appear so you can continue your work.

Thoughts on Titler Pro 5

Like I said before, when I first got the update, it had some bugs that made it difficult to do anything. Those got fixed quickly, and I was able to move forward. I find this new version easy to use and perfect for when I need to whip up a quick title.
