ESSA-1

1966 – The US launched the first operational satelliteat 7:41 UTC. The Environmental Science Services Administration (ESSA-1) was a weather satellite and the first one the US put into space. This is a spin-stabilized satellite meant to hover over Earth. ESSA-1 orbited every 100 minutes.

The device orbited Earth and sent meteorological photos back  until October 6, 1966 when the camera failed. ESSA-1 was officially deactivated on May 8, 1967.

Cubase music software has been around since 1989 by German musical software company Steinberg. The idea was to help with recording and arranging music. I remember using early versions of Cubase when I was even studying music in the early 90’s. Thee ability to create scores and record thoughts took me to a whole new level with my music.

If it wasn’t for Steinberg Cubase, we wouldn’t have many features for recording, including the Virtual Studio Technology (VST).

Fast forward to 2017 and Cubase is continuing strong with Cubase Pro 9 series. More gearing toward the laptop with touchscreen capabilities, this ninth symphony of software geared toward incorporating enhancements the customers needed to make the software work for them.

New Features in Cubase Pro 9

Zoning – The first new feature is a lower zone that enhances workflow. If you are on one screen, the lower edit zone can be easily hidden and brought back with hotkey Alt-Ctrl-E. Many different zones can be brought up and hidden. You can even select a section and instantly see the zone.

Sampler Track – Take any audio and simply drag it in. You can bring it in, edit, and create a sampler track without issue.

Mixer History – If you pull the wrong fader at the wrong time, you can easily undo it through the history option. You can even scroll back through time and compare your changes.

Updated Plugins – Greg showed us one great plugin called “Frequency”. This EQ allows you to adjust manually, or simply choose a chord to which the plugin will set up a default EQ. Audition mode allows you to hear only the particular frequencies so you can isolate and adjust.

64-bit only – If you are using 32-bit VST plugins, you won’t be able to bring them over to Cubase Pro 9. I even have some old plugins I use religiously, but with time, I’ll eventually have to drop so I can create better sounding projects and keep my computer working optimally.

1964 – The first G.I.Joe was released to the toy market. Toy company Hasbro released the 12 inch soldier to the public. High end Acoustic guitars have been made of wood to get the body and brilliance. While carbon fiber isn’t the best sounding material in it’s rough state, the folks at McPherson knew they could eventually mold it into something that does not only have the sound quality, but also the strength for any touring musician.

About the McPherson Carbon Series Guitar

Created in Sparta, Wisconsin. McPherson Guitars builds the Carbon Fiber alongside their other custom wood guitars. The carbon fiber shell is pressed using a special mold and a special proprietary blend is used on the back of the guitar to control sound and give it the mellow tones, resonance, and sustain.

The carbon fiber body makes this guitar more resistant to heat, humidity, and the accidental drop. The neck is made with a 57 million modulus truss rod in the neck (steel is 28 million). Since it is also carbon, the truss rod is also resistant to rust.

McPherson has also worked hard in bringing a pickup system into the series. With LR Baggs 9 volt element inside, you can plug into any PA system to amplify your guitar. You can also change out the pickup to your favorite brand and tailor it to your standard.

There are two models of the Carbon Fiber series – the Touring guitar and the Sable guitar. Touring is a smaller body guitar and the Sable is based on their Camrielle series wood guitar.

2012 – Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg announced the company will be filing for Public IPO. The company will be looking for 5 billion dollars for the social network. Zuckerberg wrote in a letter to potential investors (http://money.cnn.com/2012/02/01/technology/zuckerberg_ipo_letter/index.htm?iid=EL):

We think it’s important that everyone who invests in Facebook understands what this mission means to us, how we make decisions and why we do the things we do. I will try to outline our approach in this letter.

Trading began on May 18, 2012 at $38 and whereas the company was expecting a higher price, the stock closed at $38.23. The following day the stock fell even more. This made it one of the worst stock offerings of the time.

Eventually the stock started bouncing back. Today, it is worth around $76/share (at the time of writing this post)
