May 24, 1985: Quantum Computer Services was founded (AOL)

1985– Quantum Computer Services was founded. Technically, it was a reorganization of Control Video Corporation, a company that started in 1983. The company was selling online service “Gameline” to Atari 2600 users. You would pay $49.95 for the modem and also a one-time $15 setup fee. With the reorganization, Jim Kimsey became Chief Executive Officer and Marc Seriff took the CTO role. Ninety employees quit, ten remained. The company changed to sell Quantum Link for Commodore 64 and 128 consoles. Eventually, they would get into AppleLink and PC Link. Quantum Computer Services eventually (October 1989) changed their name to America Online (AOL).

Jim Kimsey left AOL in 1995, where he stayed under the limelight. He was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts by President George W. Bush.

During NAB, I talked with Travis at NewBlueFX, who showed off a concept version of their software. In this version, you could connect up to 4 cameras, and add filters, scoreboards, overlays, and much more. 

NewBlueFX is add-on software for graphics, lower 3rds, scoreboards, and more for your live switching software or hardware. It works with NewTek Tricaster, Wirecast, vMix, OBS, and many other video switchers. 

This technology preview will most likely be a new product to the NewBlueFX line of software. Adding filters, color correction, and more to a video source. 

There is no price, and since this is just a preview, the final product might be different. Travis believes a closer-to-final version will be available in the fall of 2019.

MySQL

1995– MySQL releases their SQL database program for web pages. This is known as a  Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). MySQL uses C and C++, the SQL parser used yacc and a hybrid of lexer called “sql_lex.cc”. Many different websites to this day use versions of MySQL, including us at Geekazine and the Day in Tech History.

Robert Metcalfe’s Sketch of Ethernet

1973 – Robert Metcalfe writes a thirteen-page memo describing a new type of data transmission method. His memo was entitled “Ether Acquisition”, which would connect Hawaii’s ALOHA Network.

Alto Ethernet was born on paper, but didn’t see operation until November 11, 1973 when it was implemented.

Metcalfe was awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1996 for his work on inventing Ethernet. He was also inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2007.

I travel with video gear for live streams. Therefore, packing as much gear, and keeping under 50 lbs per bag is critical. So when items are small, and light-weight, I love it. Case in point, the GL.iNet Slate. A travel router that I can use in multiple ways.

About the GL.iNet Slate

This is a 1GB 3-connection router that supplies WiFi AC, and Open WRT for under $70. You can select port 1 as a WAN input, or output if you either tether your phone, or use another WiFi signal.

Internally, the QCA9563 (@775MHz) SoC processor will handle multiple requests, so having 3-4 computers on (or more) won’t be a problem GL.iNet has tested up to 25 connections, but with some wait times. 

The Slate emits 2.4 and 5 GHz Wireless to your other devices. Tether your phone, or other 3G/4G device, and all your computers and mobile devices can pair as one. 

In some hotels, you will be able to use this router as a main hub. Even if the hotel has a login screen, the device can access to enter credentials.

The Slate also has OpenVPN support, WireGuard, Cloudflare DNS over TLS, a MicroSD card for Intranet sharing, and a programmable switch on the side so you can configure your router in two different setups.

The router is powered by 5V USB cable – which can be plugged into your computer, or into the wall wart or USB power device.

OS X Server

2001 – Apple released the Mac OS X Server, based on Rhapsody, which was a hybrid of NeXT OPENSTEP. The server ran file services, Macintosh Manager, Quicktime Streaming Server, WebObjects, NetBoot and more.

Each new version of OS X Server then coincided with the desktop release name – Jaguar, Panther, Leopard, etc.

“Built on Mac OS X’s incredibly stable and robust foundation, Mac OS X Server has the power of UNIX, yet is simple and easy to install, administer and maintain,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Mac OS X Server is Apple’s most powerful server ever and can easily integrate into Mac, Windows and UNIX networks.”
