April 12, 1976: Ronald Wayne gives up his 10% of Apple Stock

1976– What a position Ronald Wayne was in. He was the 3rd co-founder of Apple Computer on April 1 with 10% share. However, after two weeks Wayne sells his share for $800 back to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. The reason why was because if the company was to go under, he would be liable for any debts incurred. While a solid reason why (Wayne had assets that couldn’t be risked in that nature), it turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes as Apple is grossed in the billions. Wayne designed the original Apple logo and wrote the partnership agreement.

We continue to want to make these introductions pretty brief here but not this time, apparently! Here's this week's synopsis. Nvidia GTC 2019 announcementsWe discussed the recent GTC conference. Dan has been attending since well before it became the big and important conference that it is today. We get a quick update on what was covered: the long keynote (https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2019/03/18/gtc-2019-datacenter-jensen-huang-keynote/), automotive and robotics, the Mellanox acquisition, how a growing fraction of enterprise applications will be AI. In agreement with the message from GTC, Shahin re-iterates his long-held belief that the future of enterprise applications will be HPC and once again asserts that AI as we know it today is a subset of HPC. Not everyone agrees. Henry brings up varying precisions in AI and a discussion ensues about what is HPC. There seems to be agreement that regardless of what label you put on it, it is the same (HPC) industry and community that is driving this new trend. And that led to a discussion of selling into the enterprise and the need for new models and vocabulary and such. Acoustic Paneling is something that not only podcasters, video creators, or musicians need. If you have a home office, an acoustic panel can block out distractions from the outside, along with you being a distraction to others. I talk with Matt at SXSW about what Uplift has to offer.

The coolest thing was the panel we were basically standing in front of. The pattern can make any video studio pop out, while reducing the high frequencies of the room. 

There are many types of acoustic panels, as well, From panels attached to one of their Uplift desks, to wall mounted stations, and even full cubicle versions. 

I did gravitate to the wall mounted version. Many podcasters talk about having a small area where they can work, and this can fit in a closet easily.

April 11, 2009: Susan Boyle hits the Internet

2009– Susan Boyle takes the Stage at “Britian’s Got Talent”. A person that most would write-off at first glance, sings “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables. Once she was done, the 48 year-old Scot got a standing ovation. The next day, her audition was posted and became one of the most viral on YouTube. It had been downloaded over 347 million times.

Of course, Boyle’s performance has been overshadowed by Gangnam Style…

April 10, 2003: The first Sony Blu Ray Player hit store shelves

2003 – Sony Blu-Ray players hit store shelves for the first time. The BDZ-S77 was the first model, but didn’t sell too well because of the $3800 price tag attached to it. Add to it no movies available in the Blu-Ray format just yet. In fact, the first Blu-Ray movies didn’t hit shelves until June 20, 2006. 50 First Dates, the Fifth Element, Hitch, Terminator and Charlies Angels: Full Throttle were the first titles to be released.

Some content creators decide to move away from their phones. They want something easy, and simple to setup. Marantz has a simple solution in two products – the AVS, and the Turret. Easy to setup, and with all you need to get streaming.

This is the larger of the two devices. Both items are table-top devices that contain a USB camera and microphone. A ring light is attached, with ability for 3300k to 5600k lighting. The USB-A or USB-C connection allows for connection into the Mac or PC.  

The Turret is the higher end version of the two, with the microphone being on an arm. You can connect directly to YouTube or Facebook, or use a software switcher, such as OBS or Wirecast, to record and stream from. The Turret streams in 1080p, with 48 kHz/16 bit audio.. 

The Turret stands up to 19.6 inches, and the microphone arm comes out to 33.9 inches. Video, audio buttons, and headphone jack with volume are right on the front of the unit. 

Both camera and microphone can be turned, or angled, for whatever you need. The ring light will follow the camera. 

Marantz AVS

The AVS is smaller, and doesn’t have a microphone arm, but the base mic will do the job – also at 48 kHz/16 bit. This can also work as a room conference device, or for a podcaster or livestreamer on a budget.
