April 9, 2012: Facebook buys Instagram

2012 – Facebook – trying to get a hold on photosharing – decides to not wait for their iPhone app to come out but instead purchase Instagram for 1 billion dollars ($300 million and 23 million shares of Facebook stock). The reason Facebook made the purchase was for the close to 50 million Instagram users. Facebook had plans to keep both companies separate, but found later that joining the two via databases would help both companies grow.  The companies finalized the deal on September 6, 2012.

I talked with Dane Brehm, Digital Imaging technician from Cintegral Technologies (Annabelle Comes Home, Vice, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) at NAB 2019 about video production and workflow. Dane brought part of his rig, which included the OWC Akitio Enclosure, and Kingston NVMe storage.  

During the conversation, we talked about not only how he manages his data, but also how he has to send encrypted data across the Internet. This means he needs a good storage solution that works fast. 

That is what NVMe is for. 

Non-Volitile Memory Express (NVMe) is different than SSD because it can read and write at the same time. This can cut down production time, as Brehm mentions:

 

Encryption is a big deal. We have to control data, we have to make sure that no one else can see it. And so what traditional drives we had an issue with encryption just not being fast enough, but interfacing it. But with NVMe and and really Kingston – both the consumer and the enterprise products – have that all built in. It makes it my work much easier much faster. We’re looking at somewhere about a 12 to 15 hours savings per week on like a 4k Netflix show.Dane R. Brehm

Collin has some serious beef with Apple this week which is weird since he's a pretty big fan of their stuff. To be fair though, it's with Face ID which does kind of suck. But to make matters worse, not only is Collin not happy with Apple, they announced a product cancellation and Netflix isn't making Apple's user's lives any easier. April 8, 1983: Steve Jobs entices John Sculley to Apple as CEO

1983 – John Sculley, who was president of PepsiCo at the time, decides to leave to become president and CEO of Apple Computer at request of Steve Jobs. Sculley’s campaign of “the Pepsi Challenge” was new thinking and helped Pepsi gain market share over Coca Cola. Steve Jobs wanted that passion so he could beat IBM. Sculley was responsible for incorporating the PowerPC chip in Mac computers.John Sculley took the 800 million dollar in sales to 8 billion. Tension ultimately took it’s toll, as Sculley was forced out in 1993 and was replaced by Gil Amelio.

It looks like a big air mattress from the pool side, but Airhush is more than that. This is a ISAT – or Inflatable Sound Attenuation Technology. Easily inflatable, and install panels that you can use for sound control, or a portable room.

April 7, 2008: Intel ATOM Processor Launches

2008– Intel launches their newest processor: the ATOM processor. It’s codename was Silverthorne. It is a ATOM Z single processor using the 45 nm die processes (the processor was smaller than a penny). The ATOM processor would run at 800 MHZ with a 512 L2 cache and 533 Front side bus. The most current ATOM processor is the S1220, S1240 and S1260 for servers (released December 2012). ATOM processors can run 32 bit and 64 bit hardware and software.
