Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  A study at Ohio State’s Neurological Institute has found that Smart Socks, from a company called Palarum can be a very effective way to reduce the risks of falls in hospital settings.  Those falls can often be serious and result in extended hospitalizations or worse.  The socks have sensors…that connect via Bluetooth to  an iPad which in turn…uses WiFi to alert nurses or caregivers when a patient is trying to get up.  Co-founder Chris Baker…

“We can now measure the activity of a patient’s foot and then using various algorithms… the sock can actually tell the system that a patient stands about to take place and when the foot actually touches the ground and adds pressure… alert us then.”
