Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   At the Out of Oregon photography conference this fall…I got to meet some of the best landscape photographers in the world…who it turns out…came from all walks of life.  Ian Plant…had been a lawyer.  Why give that up?

“Well, pretty simple.  I hated being a lawyer and I love being a photographer.  Actually I didn’t know I loved being a photographer until I went to law school and my first summer in law school I worked for a firm in New York City.  First time in my life I really made some money, so at the end of the summer I bought a camera.  And I realized then that I’d just made a huge one hundred thousand dollar mistake.”

Another top photographer, Levi Sim, had worked in oil fields and taught English in China…before he found his focus, so to speak.   And about working with Out of Oregon…created by Out of Chicago…he says..

“A great way for me to learn…is to teach.”

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  She was a Web developer sitting at a desk, staring at a computer screen all day….even though she lived along the stunning Oregon coastline.  Patricia Davidson would go there now and then with her little point and shoot camera.  With it, she won a local photography contest about ten years ago and her husband bought her a dSLR camera.  Four years ago…they took off in an RV…she quit her job…and turned full time professional photographer..

“Well my favorite thing to shoot is anything with flowing water.  So I love seascapes and I love waterfalls.”  And you’re in a great area for that.. “Yeah…and being in the Pacific Northwest there’s so much opportunity for that.”

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  These days Gavin Hardcastle is a well known fine art photographer and instructor based in British Columbia.  His enthusiasm and energy are contagious and fun.  I got to spend time with him at the Out of Oregon photography conference run by Out of Chicago.  But Gavin picked up photography as a second career…leaving behind a successful career producing music..

“I used to have to write music on command.  It was something I would have to do as my job.  When it is not necessarily something that you are doing because you love it anymore..it is something you are doing because there’s an expectation of you…you kind of lose the love for it.  And so for me I started to lose my love for music creation just at the same time my love for photography was starting to build up.”
