Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. A lot of people love photography…and with the capabilities of smartphone cameras today…we’re shooting more pictures than ever. We almost always have a camera with us. But turning pro is a big step…and sometimes unexpected. At the recent Out of Oregon photography conference run by Out of Chicago…one of the top pros and instructors, Nick Page, told me he was cutting grass on a golf course until he picked up a camera while recovering from a back injury six years ago..
“Within a year of picking up my first camera, I was shooting enough portraiture and weddings and that type of photography on weekends that I was actually making more on the weekend than I was during the week.”
At NickPagePhotography.com you’ll find more…including Nick’s podcast. And he’s not alone. We’ll have more stories to share in the days to come.

“We’re using a four foot tube, it’s a plastic tube and I put a flashlight inside of it. I go behind Kim and I simply make some movements with my light tube during a long exposure shot.”
We got to see it first hand at the recent Out of Oregon photography conference…and Kim says it is easy enough for anyone to try..
“It is pretty simple. It’s a simple tool that we use and the principle is simple. So it’s accessible for anyone to start and experiment with it.”
They’ve shot all over the world. Check out the results at http://aboutthetubes.com where you also find videos, instructions and even supplies.

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. What are you doing with all of those photos and videos you shoot with your phone? Chances are they just stay there until you’ve used up all the available space on your device…and then you start deleting. There are other smart solutions. The SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive Go and Ultra Dual Drive USB Type-C gadgets can make backing up photos and videos simple and fast. Once on the small flash drives…you can plug them into a PC or Mac…for longer term storage. And there’s the option of using an external drive..like a Western Digital My Passport on the computer for back ups. It is also a good idea to store full resolution pictures and videos in the cloud. You’ve got lots of choices from Apple to Amazon or Google. SmugMug is a favorite of mine…with prices starting at under fifty dollars a year. It makes storing, sharing and showing images a great experience…even using Fire TV. You can try it for free at www.smugmug.com.

A company called Flume is doing just that with a sensor that is placed on a water meter that connects to a wireless bridge…which you then can monitor with an app. It also works with Amazon’s Alexa. Installation is easy. CEO Eric Adler..
“We just developed a sensor that wraps around the existing meter. So it’s literally just a rubber strap and a sensor that goes on the side of the meter. From the box arriving at your door to getting it all set up takes about ten to fifteen minutes. There’s no plumbing required. We have these all self installed, there’s no need for professional installation. We ship them all over the country right now.”
The 200 dollar price tag can end up saving you much, much more. There’s more info at www.flumetech.com.
