  • Talking with kids about phones and AI: CTIA head Ajit Pai

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. Have you had the talk with your kids? Not that talk. The one about phone use, social media and these days responsible use of AI. Former FCC chairman Ajit Pai heads CTIA, the wireless industry association and he tells us as the father of two teens…

“Just before the school year started, we sat down and talked about some of the rules of the road. No phones at the dinner table, for example. Phones have to be turned in at 8 o’clock, I have to approve all the apps that they’re on, they have limited screen time. Those types of things. And while you may get eye rolls and some resistance at the beginning, once kids become used to that routine, it becomes muscle memory for them and ultimately that helps them succeed while still benefitting from this technology revolution.”

  • Kids, phones and AI: CTIA head Ajit Pai

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. With the school year back in full swing, parents still have lots of concerns about phone use, social media and these days how kids are using AI. And also how scammers are using AI against kids. At CTIA, the wireless industry association, CEO Ajit Pai…former chairman of the FCC by the way…has been going through the same trials with kids at home…

“I think technology, wireless phones and AI, have a great potential to help kids learn and better connect with their friends and family. But on the other hand, you also want to guard against some of the down sides, getting away from that core mission of helping kids nourish their curiosity and creativity and reasoning skills and genuine understanding about the world that their in.”

Some tips for parents on lessening the dangers in our next report.

  • Fall search trends? Pumpkin spice slipping?

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. Apple picking or pumpkin picking? Pumpkin spice latte…or Chai or maybe Matcha? There are some surprises when it comes to Fall search trends. Google’s Sarah Armstrong says the once powerful pumpkin spice trend seems to be slipping a bit..

“Across the country we are seeing a little less interest in pumpkin spice. I think we see people still drinking it, but matcha’s really getting competitive here.”

And about the picks for picking?

“So most of the country, pumpkin patches are the more popular search here. But along the east coast, it’s apple picking. So it’s like a very clear divide when you get to the east coast. Suddenly everyone’s searching for apple picking, but everywhere else in the country, they’re going to the pumpkin patch.”

NFL teams are trending now too along with fall home décor. Learn more at trends.google.

  • Putting Anker Soundcore Space 2 headphones to the test

Techstination... your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Nate Levas, filling in for Fred on this episode. I’ve had a chance to test out the Anker Soundcore Space 2 headphones… which were designed from the ground up for air travel. The over ear cups were comfortable for lengthy flights…..and the sound quality was good. About the noise cancellation capability…it dramatically reduced aircraft engine sounds…while listening music or watching video. The battery life while using the headphones was good. The company claims up to fifty hours with noise cancellation turned on. And they say up to 70 hours without. We’ll be checking with the company…but we have run into issues with battery drain while the headphones were off and being stored. About pricing.. the list is about 130 dollars. Find more info at Soundcore.com.

  • Here come the new iPhones

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin.

Apple has kicked off a brand-new era with new CEO John Ternus and the company’s first-ever foldable device: the iPhone Duo. Folded up, it is roughly the size of a passport. Open it up, and you’re looking at a remarkably thin 7.6-inch flexible inner display. It’s a gorgeous, premium piece of engineering, but it carries a luxury price tag—starting at $1,999. Pre-orders for the Duo start October 16th, with devices shipping on October 23rd.For the traditionalists, Apple is also out with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max powered by the industry’s first 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip. The headline feature here is the camera system. Apple has introduced a physical, mechanical variable aperture to the 48-megapixel main lens.
