Proving you don't always need a theme to have a pretty good show, today's program was all about requests, dedications, and good stuff we just needed to hear. Sure, we paid tribute to Richard Thompson who's coming to town, and Paul Kelly who's just plain great, but the rest was pure goodness from the likes of Fred Eaglesmith, David Francey, Mary Gauthier, and many more!

A bit of an abbreviated podcast this week, since we had trouble with the station's digital recorder/podcast maker thingy and part of the show didn't get recorded (a good reminder to listen live, whenever you can, because it was good!). You still get some upcoming show info, music from the mailbag, a brief tribute to Richard Thompson, and a look at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, going on tonight!

Since then, we've become big fans and we're all watching his star rise, so we can say that we knew him back when. He came in to chat and play us a song live before his gig.

A special pre-recorded segment of Steel Belted Free Range Radio featuring Romi Mayes & Gurf Morlix. Romi is one of the brightest stars on the horizon in Winnipeg and beyond. Her last album Sweet Something Steady catapulted her from local fave to international darling, and that has a lot to do with the legendary producer she hired to shape the album. I've been following Gurf Morlix for years, ever since I noticed that his name appeared on many of my favourite albums. Since then, I discovered that he's more than just a great producer, he's a great musician as well. I was lucky enough to meet him and get to know him a bit when Romi first brought him to town a couple of years ago, and I found out then that he's a very intelligent, very personable, totally interesting guy as well. At that time we were treated to a couple of live performances of songs that were later released on what is by far his greatest accomplishment as a singer/songwriter, Diamonds to Dust. I was knocked out then, because even though I was such a fan and so familiar with his talent and track record, I underestimated him as a singer/songwriter. Never again, I thought. Well, I was expecting great things, but when he came in late Monday night and played me the first song from his upcoming CD, Last Exit to Happyland, I knew he'd raised the bar that much higher. That powerful performance alone would have made me put him way up high on my list of all time favourite in-studio guests. But that's not all he did. Oh no. Just wait until you hear him do his version of Blaze Foley's classic "Cold Cold World." Quite honestly, perhaps my favourite musical moment on air so far.
