Leontine Sagan had directed Christa Winsloe’s play on stage, but filming the story was a very different matter. She needed an imposing staircase for a start. This episode takes you through the filming of Mädchen in Uniform, from finding the perfect location to creating that famous dormitory kiss scene. It lingers on the film’s most beautiful moments and suggests why a cinema audience might have been so receptive to such a potentially controversial idea as the love of a schoolgirl for her female teacher.
