Tempor Footnotes Podcast, Episode 17—Q4
None of us know what the future holds; we make sense of the uncertainty with a degree of unhinged optimism. What can be better said about being laid off than the way Don Draper said it? “You’ll tell them the next thing will be better because it always is.”

Note: This episode was recorded on 5/15/20 before #blackouttuesday. As Marcy Harriell puts it, “This week was created to #AmplifyMelanatedVoices. We are instead being muted by a swath of black squares, and while it might read as solidarity, the only thing we see in our feed is ads.” There is no need not to have voices be heard or stories be told, so for that reason, we want to start posting these episodes so that we can move forward telling the stories from the people that we want to tell stories from. Here is the first of two podcasts that were recorded before the protests.

In this episode of Tempor Footnotes, I’d like to introduce one of my best friends and guardian angel, Julie Miller. She was a friend when I was a young kid leaving my nest in Texas for Boston back in 2004. She invited me to her parents’ house during my first holiday season away from home. When I got out of grad school, she got me a job as a security guard at the First Church of Christ Scientist World Headquarters. We worked there together for a little more than a year. We have kept in contact, and since 2017 she has been sailing boats across oceans.
In November 2019, Julie Miller and Ken Johnson, left in a 40-foot catamaran named Painkiller from Mystic, Connecticut, with a plan to sail westward and arrive in New Zealand in time for the 2021 America’s Cup. They narrowly left Panama before the COVID-19 global shutdown. Currently, they reside in the makeshift sailing community, The Hotel California, docked along the shore of Pape’ete, Tahiti, along with the roughly 10,000 boats stranded around the world. Their story is beautifully cataloged on the website, http://www.sailingpainkiller.com. Please join me in welcoming Julie Miller to the podcast, I hope you enjoy this episode.

In a previous episode, Scott invited listeners to join the podcast. It was an open invitation to have a conversation and catch up. Of all the people who reached out, Carl, a longtime friend, was the first one to jump in—not only once, but twice, because of technical issues.
Carl Gunhouse is a Brooklyn, NY-based photographer who's work has been featured in Vice, The New York Times, and Maximum Rock and Roll. You can learn about his work at https://www.lensculture.com/carl-gunhouse, and explore his writings on the site Searching for the Light. Gunhouse is also an educator and co-founder of Transmitter, a collaborative curatorial initiative based in Brooklyn, NY, focusing on programming that is multidisciplinary, international, and experimental.
