We are alive! Tennis and Bagels is alive! Andre and Vansh got together after a month-long break to have a chat about the US Open men's draw - the last major of the year, the 4th Grand Slam tournament. They cover nearly the whole draw, taking some time to chat about the different sections to pick the players who could have the best chance of advancing in the tournament. In the end, the main questions remain: can Novak Djokovic seal the ultimate tennis achievement with the Calendar Grand Slam, or simply the Grand Slam, in New York? Or will the next generation of tennis players, led by Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, prevent the Serb from achieving glory and instead one of them claim their first Grand Slam? We'll have to watch during the fortnight.

July 17, 2021 A chat with Juan José Vallejo: on tennis writing, the Holy Triad, and much more
It’s a happy time at Tennis and Bagels as Owen gets a chance to talk with his idol: former tennis writer Juan José Vallejo. Juan José tells his remarkable story of being a tennis fan and later a tennis writer, first on Pete Bodo’s TennisWorld, then on The Changeover — which Owen got hooked on in March of this year and hasn’t stopped reading since — and finally for Rolling Stone.
After talking about his journey through tennis writing, Juan José shows the unbelievable extent of his tennis expertise through talking about the Big Three, a few NextGen players that never were, the merits of physical vs. mental peaks, and of course the greatest tennis match ever: the 2009 Australian Open semifinal between Nadal and Verdasco.
Juan José was incredibly generous with his time, and Owen is still buzzing at getting the chance to have this chat. Here are links to Juan José’s writing (be like Owen. Go down the rabbit hole. The full team is back together with a great lineup of topics for this episode! First, an analysis of the Ashleigh Barty-Karolina Plíšková final, with a deep dive into tactics and Barty’s impressive win. We then discuss the high-quality women’s semifinals and tournament as a whole, mentioning players who impressed us or have reason to be optimistic going forward. June 28, 2021 Bite-size: Andre's opinion on Djokovic, Federer, Barty Kvitova at Wimbledon
In a nostalgic moment for Andre, he takes some 10 minutes by himself to talk about WImbledon. Djokovic is the clear favourite, but he would just love Federer to win, and Medvedev to assert himself more. On the women's side, he thinks it's a free-for-all. Not any woman has exactly proven to the the player to beat in this tournament - but we could have surprises.
