The first edition of a homegrown literary journal that offers Northern Territory writers, artists and poets a new forum for thought and expression will be published online next week.

General Editor Dr Glenn Morrison said Borderlands was a storytelling publication that would foster a unique Territory voice.

“It’s a non-academic publication that will capture some of the essence of the Territory and our experience of living in it,” Dr Morrison said.

This first online pilot edition will carry diverse content including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and audio and video pieces that take advantage of the digital environment.”

Dr Morrison said that he and literary colleagues – Dr Adelle Sefton-Rowston from CDU’s College of Indigenous Futures, Arts and Society and Raelke Grimmer from the College of Education – had been overwhelmed by more than 120 submissions from about 60 contributors.

“There was so much good material: visual art, digital stories and prison poetry among them. We’ve selected the best for the online edition, striking what we think is a balance between some renowned published authors and some emerging writers who show great potential.”

Mental health continues to rate as the number one most important issue for Northern Territory young people for the third consecutive year, according to Mission Australia’s Youth Survey Report 2019, closely followed by alcohol and drugs.

In 2019, the issues considered most important by young people in Australia today were mental health (36.2%), closely followed by one third of respondents reporting the environment (34.2%) and one quarter citing equity and discrimination (24.8%). This is the third year running that mental health has been cited as the top national issue for young people.
