Hebrews 12:18-29

Jesus's blood speaks better than the blood of Abel. Abel, being dead, yet speaks. God used to speak to the fathers in various ways, but is now speaking to us through His Son. All of this together leads our author to say we must not refuse the one who is speaking. Andrew and Edwin expound how the point is we must not turn away from Jesus, but hang on to Him until and through the very end.

Our author has set the stage for an amazing revelation about Christ's church. It is the heavenly reality of which geographical Jerusalem and geological Zion were the earthly copies. We have come to the heavenly city, the true city when we have come to Christ's church and Christ's covenant. We are there now even as we await the ultimate realization of this heavenly city.

Hebrews 12:1-3

It's a first! Andrew and Edwin have a bit of a disagreement. But what an amicable way to disagree. Edwin suggests Hebrews 11 urges us to look to Jesus because our author pick and chose the characters to highlight and the bits of the story to remember because they foreshadow Jesus. Andrew thinks it is just examples of faith. In the end, they decide they may be making a distinction without a difference and focusing just on emphasis. What do you think?

Hebrews 11:29-40

We all know faith is the victory. However, Andrew and Edwin, looking at the end of Hebrews 11 begin to wonder how victorious it is. Some of those faithful had some pretty awful lives and met some pretty awful deaths. Through this discussion we discover the victory of faith is not what we often think. It is not leading healthy, wealthy, meaningful, and fulfilling lives. It is looking to the reward following the resurrection.
