Logical Positivism.
What separates meaningful language from non-meaningful language, genuine science from pseudo-science, and productive philosophy from unproductive philosophy? In the early 20th century, a philosophical movement known as "logical positivism" attempted to specify criteria that could be used to demarcate meaningful language from non-meaningful language. These logical positivists, such as Rudolf Carnap and A.J. Ayer, claimed that only empirically verifiable statements are meaningful, and that any language not empirically verifiable is literally meaningless.
In this 50th episode of Meta Treks, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling examine the claims of logical positivism through the lens of Star Trek. From the story-based use of language in the TNG episode "Darmok" to the many possible uses of the word "dilithium," Mike and Zachary offer a Star Trek based critique of logical positivism inspired by Ludwig Wittgenstein's account of the meaningfulness of language as its use in various context-dependent "language games."

Montalban v. Cumberbatch
"Khan Noonien Singh is the most dangerous adversary the Enterprise ever faced. He is brilliant, ruthless and he will not hesitate to kill every single one of you." Those are the words Ambassador Spock used to describe Star Trek's most iconic villain, and in this episode of Standard Orbit our...Khanversation revolves around who makes a better Khan, Montalban or Cumberbatch? We're going to look at the Khans from the perspective of character, screen presence, passion, and villainy. A Khanparison if you will.
The Kelvin Timeline did not branch off from the Prime Timeline until 2233, so the Khan we meet in Into Darkness is truly the same Khan we meet in Space Seed. However, the circumstances surrounding their revivals are very different, which inform the character and his actions moving forward in both timelines. We delve into the drives and motivations of each, which Khan was a "greater" villain, the screen presence of both of the incredible actors who portrayed him. And it wouldn't be an episode of Standard Orbit without a few tangents for good measure.

Sheridon Stokes Interview.
Sheridon Stokes was hired as a piccolo player in the Denver Symphony when he was 16 years old and was the youngest contract musician in Hollywood at age 20. At this young age, he was working with the 20th Century Fox Orchestra under Alfred Newman. He has been featured in many television and film scores, including the television series Mission Impossible, Roots, and Kung Fu, as well as the films Jaws, E.T., Ghost, Glory, Patriot Games, and more recently, Mission Impossible, Waterworld, Jumanji, Independence Day, and Rush Hour II. He was solo flute at the Academy Awards in 1997 and 1998 and played the famous penny whistle solo from the Titanic song “My Heart Will Go On” with Celine Dion.
In this episode on Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Andy Farber, composer for two episodes of Star Trek: Continues, and Sheridon Stokes. We discuss his early works in film and television, the kind of flutes he has in his arsenal, many of the composers he worked with, and some fun memories of Bernard Hermann.

However, he wasn't always the hero we know and love. As a boy, Jimmy Kirk was on a path to a much different destiny. How did this troubled young man grow up to be the legend? Join us as we explore his humble beginnings in a story that inspired elements of Star Trek 2009!
In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing, Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson talk about Best Destiny. We discuss it being on the short list, the 09 tie in, the Kirk story, fathers and sons, life's not fair, control of the soul, change and flexibility and our ratings.
