In this episode of Thailand Adventure Secrets, I sit down with Kneet, a Thai Sikh-Punjabi singer and songwriter who grew up right here in Bangkok. Raised in a strict family with very clear expectations for her future, Kneet eventually made a decision that would change everything. She went against her parents’ wishes and left Bangkok for New York City.

But the dream of New York wasn’t always glamorous. Kneet shares what it was like growing up in Bangkok, the difficult decision to leave home, the struggles she faced after arriving in New York, and how those experiences helped shape the woman, and artist, she is today.

We also talk about her music and her new song, “Bangkok to New York,” which brings together the two cities that have played such an important role in her story.

This is more than a conversation about becoming a singer. It’s about Thailand, family, cultural expectations, taking risks, finding your own voice, and having the courage to create a life that’s truly yours.

What’s the best way to travel around Thailand? Sometimes the ride itself makes all the difference.

This week, I’m preparing to board an overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai for the Backpacker’s Rite of Passage Challenge. (more on that in a different episode - stay tuned)

But It got me thinking about all the ways I’ve traveled through Thailand - and how different the experience can be from getting around back home in the United States.

In this episode, I share six transportation adventures: riding Thai trains, crossing Bangkok on a Grab motorbike, island hopping by longtail boat or ferry, navigating the BTS and MRT, hiring a van for a custom day out, and using buses to reach places beyond the rail lines.

I’ll also tell you why I avoid speedboats when I can, and what to check before heading to a Bangkok bus or train station.

Whether you’re planning your first Thailand trip or looking for a new way to explore, I hope this episode helps you enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

In this episode of Thailand Adventure Secrets, I’m finally sharing Koh Kood, an island that still feels like the Thailand I imagined 30 years ago. No giant hotel chains dominating the coastline, no crazy nightlife scene, and beaches where you can still wonder, “How does nobody know about this place?”

I’ll take you to beautiful Bang Bao Bay and Koh Kood Resort, a place that looks almost exactly like the tropical Thailand I dreamed about before I ever came here. Then we’ll head to The Survival by Seudam and Sunkey Beach, a beach I first discovered on Instagram and one that may genuinely be among the prettiest secret beaches I’ve found anywhere in Thailand.

We’ll also jump on a motorbike and explore Koh Kood’s jungle interior, including Klong Chao and Klong Yai Kee waterfalls, talk snorkeling and diving, and cover the things you should know before choosing where to stay on this surprisingly large island.

Koh Kood isn’t for everyone. If you want clubs, crowds and nonstop nightlife, this probably isn’t your island. But if you’re searching for beautiful quiet beaches, jungle waterfalls, diving, motorbike adventures and a part of Thailand that still feels wonderfully undiscovered, put Koh Kood on your list.

Over the last few years, I've heard from several parents who backpacked through Thailand in their twenties, usually during university or just after graduation. Now their kids are almost grown, and they want them to experience the same kind of adventure.

More than one of those parents called their original Thailand trip a "rite of passage."

That phrase stuck with me... So I'm putting it to the test.

In this episode, I introduce Thailand's Backpacker Rite of Passage Challenge: seven full days of traveling through Thailand with a backpack while trying to keep the entire in-country cost under $1,000.

And we're not spending seven days just sitting around a hostel trying not to spend money.

The plan includes Bangkok, Chinatown, an overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai, a two-day mountain trek, a jungle camp beside a waterfall, elephants, bamboo rafting, Chiang Mai's Old City, Koh Chang, snorkeling, motorbikes, beaches and more.

I've researched it. I've priced it.

Now I'm going to actually do it (in early October 2026) and track every baht I spend.

I also share why backpacking Thailand isn't necessarily just for twenty-somethings. Some of the most interesting people I've met in Thailand's hostels have been early retirees and digital nomads who figured out how to make their dollars and euros go dramatically farther while traveling around Southeast Asia.

Maybe backpacking Thailand really is a rite of passage... And, maybe, there's no age limit.
