It is the time of year when gym floors are dominated by people embarking on new year goals, splurging on memberships, subscriptions, and state-of-the-art equipment in a bid to become the ultimate fitness fanatic.

But despite starting the year with the best intentions, a quarter of people admit to giving up on their New Year’s fitness-related goals in previous years before the end of January - with four in ten acknowledging that their fitness targets won’t have the longevity to last until the summer.

New data shows that over 40% of people admit to having wasted money on gym equipment or subscribing to a gym membership that they use less than they anticipated. Two-thirds (64%) admit to wasting £153.70 a year on both fitness equipment and gym membership – totalling almost £4 billion wasted each year across the entire UK.

With the continued cost-of-living crisis – this year nearly six in ten people (59%) are evaluating how much financial resources they spend on health and wellbeing. To battle the increased pressure on people’s budgets, a fifth of people (21%) signal that they are looking for new ways to keep active in 2023, which doesn’t involve expensive gym memberships or the need for fancy gym equipment.

To help the nation become more physically active, Sweatcoin is rewarding people by giving them currency in reward for daily steps. Users can earn 10p-50p for their 10,000 steps a day. And with nearly half (44%) of the nation participating in a simple walk to benefit their mental health, it’s a simple way to generate some savvy savings. Sweatcoin was inspired to launch the app when they experienced a loss of motivation to stay physically fit. Their vision is to enable a direct tangible correlation between health and wealth and is available to talk about how people can get ahead of their fitness and health goals in an achievable and affordable way.

As someone who’s fallen in love with fitness and challenges, Oleg has also recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and is happy to share his experience and advice.

  • Deborah Chester

Deborah Chester's early years were fraught with difficulties due to undiagnosed dyslexia, which often led to her being labelled as a daydreamer. Frustrated with school, she left at the age of 15. Her life changed dramatically in August 2003 when she was involved in a horseback riding accident that nearly took her life. This experience prompted her family to make a bold move halfway around the world.

In 2007, Deborah had an eerily realistic dream that foretold a series of tornados that would devastate her family's home. The dream proved to be prophetic, and Deborah's quick thinking and action saved her family's lives. The storms left them with nothing, and they were forced to rely on the kindness of friends while they started over.

Despite the challenges she faced growing up and the trials she has endured in her adult life, Deborah has persevered. She has become an inspiration to others who face similar challenges, and her story serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience and perseverance.

Deborah is a published author and motivational speaker who shares her experiences and insights with others. She has written several books, including a memoir about her life and her journey of self-discovery. Deborah's story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the resilience of the human soul.

  • Emma Robertson

Two-thirds of parents (65%) say they've been concerned by content their child has viewed online, according to new research released to mark Safer Internet Day.

The findings from a poll commissioned by Vodafone further suggest only 1 in 8 parents (13%) feel very confident with the safety features designed to keep children safe online

The study highlights a digital knowledge gap between the generations, with 12 revealed to be the age at which parents feel their child's digital knowledge overtakes their own.

6 in 10 parents (60%) said they wished they were more digitally savvy with two-thirds (66%) admitting they are completely baffled by digital slang words, such us "oomf" (one of my friends), "cheugy" (out of date; trying too hard) and "smishing" (a scam involving the use of text messages).

As the debate over the long-awaited Online Safety Bill continues to make headlines, 45% of respondents said they were most concerned about their child's exposure to harmful or inappropriate content. They also worried about online bullying (40%), strangers communicating with their child (38%) and about how their child's mental health could be affected (26%).

Social media apps such as Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook were the online platforms that prompted the most concerns about safety from parents, with more than a quarter (27%) claiming they would feel more at ease with their child using the internet if they had a better understanding of how to keep them safe.

Remarkably, while around 1 in 7 (15%) claim their child has previously managed to disable in internet safety settings they have put in place, nearly 1 in 6 (17%) parents believe their children are safe online without supervision or controls.

The findings are released in line with the launch of Vodafone's interactive Digital Parenting Pro, one of the biggest parental controls and safety settings resources in the UK.

Created in partnership with Digital Awareness UK, the hub, which includes tips from NSPCC experts, will equip parents and carers with all the information and tools they need to feel confident about the social media apps their children use, the games they play and the sites they access.

Joining the conversation is Emma Robertson who campaigns to help young people survive and thrive online. She'll be sharing her top tips on how parents can keep their children safe online and on what young people themselves can do to avoid potentially harmful content.

  • Simon Napier-Bell

Amsterdam Rock Exchange is a production house spawned from two years of Covid.

Two old friends in Amsterdam decided to write some songs together. They were Richard Molenaar, once a budding rock musician who then became a businessman, and Evert Abbing, one of the Netherlands' top record producers. Many of the songs they wrote were in the style of classic rock, so they focused on these and asked some of their musician friends to help take them a step further. First, they asked the celebrated Dutch drummer Hans Eijkenaar to replace their programmed drums with some world-class rock drumming. Then they bought in one of the Netherlands' great guitarists, Arnold van Dongen. As the tracks got better, more friends were contacted, and Richard and Evert were nothing if not well-connected. Three more of their friends joined in - Rhino Edwards and Richie Malone from Status Quo, and Paul Hirsh formerly the keyboard player with Chris Rea.

When Covid arrived and locked everyone down, Richard decided to spend some time taking the tracks further. He contacted another old friend, British rock manager Simon Napier-Bell. Simon thought that what they’d created ‘just for fun‘ was far too good to be left on the shelf. He worked with Richard and Evert to create lyrics that matched the quality of the music; then they contacted Dutch rock singer Marijn Slager. He loved the songs and wanted to do vocals for them.

By then there was a vast number of tracks, overdubs and alternative takes. A fresh pair of ears was needed, so they tasked British producer James Kenosha with distilling it into a finished album. He achieved it brilliantly and the end result is Rock Perfect – an album of classic rock from Amsterdam Rock Exchange.

From there, a new production company emerged. Firstly, British singer Tori McKew was signed to re-sing one of the songs as a dance track, Destiny, which in March this year hit Number Ten in the Music Week Club Dance chart. She then recorded another of the songs, Rain, as a follow-up single. Next, Dutch singer HRTMN joined in. He recorded and released Magnificent, another song from the same production team and songwriters, but this time not from the album, and not rock. Now Amsterdam Rock Exchange are planning auditions in the Netherlands for contemporary artists of all sorts for their roster – pop, rock, fusion and dance.

So from Covid and lockdown, Amsterdam Rock Exchange has emerged. An Anglo-Dutch production centre for contemporary popular music.
