As we mark British Heart week (7th - 15th June), new research has found that while over half of people in the UK aged 55 and over have spoken about their cholesterol levels with a GP, there are still gaps in the public’s knowledge regarding cholesterol and its impact on our health.
Close to half of adults in the UK are living with cholesterol levels above national guidelines, putting them at risk of suffering from heart conditions and other circulatory diseases, according to the British Heart Foundation.
High levels of cholesterol can be caused by several reasons, such as lifestyle, family history and health issues. There are some factors, such as age, gender and family history that cannot be controlled, however, other aspects such as changing diet, increasing exercise and stopping smoking can all help to lower cholesterol levels.
A new survey, commissioned by Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK, has revealed that while 52% have spoken about cholesterol with their GP and half (50%) have had their cholesterol levels checked with their GP practice, many are still unaware of what it means to have good cholesterol or what a healthy level is.
Almost a third of people (29%) were unsure or didn’t know where to get a cholesterol check and only 6% knew how often they should get their cholesterol checked as recommended by the NHS every five years.
People with high cholesterol often don’t display symptoms, and many don’t realise they have a problem with cholesterol until they develop a more serious health issue, such as a heart attack or stroke. Cholesterol levels are measured through a blood test and are available as part of an NHS health check provided for free every five years for those aged 40-74.
For those aged 55 or over who have previously suffered a serious medical episode such as a heart attack or stroke, 76% were very or somewhat concerned about suffering from another related condition, but more than a quarter (27%) didn’t plan to or hadn’t thought about making any changes to manage their cholesterol levels.

2022 marks 50 years of Leo Sayer as a recording artist.
With the world gradually emerging from a two-year hiatus, Leo will be celebrating this milestone to great effect, with a live performing schedule throughout 2022, along with a brand new album.
Leo, who has had worldwide #1 singles up to 2006, as well as numerous GRAMMY and BASCA awards, is currently racing to the top of the Dance Charts with a new Armand van Helden re-working of his 2006 UK #1 single with Meck.
During this period of much-perceived inactivity, Leo has been extremely active, spending a lot of time recording and releasing new singles - ‘My City In Lockdown’ and ‘How Did We Get Here’ - as well as collaborating on the tribute single to his friend and late-guitarist, Al Hodge, by recording Al’s classic track ‘Tradewinds’.
However, Leo also found the time to self-produce this new album; his own take on songs written and composed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison ‘NORTHERN SONGS’ is born; a 19 track CD and 2LP collection of simply timeless songs, with a limited signed vinyl edition.
The release will also be available digitally.

A grandmother who owns the largest collection of royal memorabilia in the world has revealed how her thousands of artefacts are worth more than her £200,000 house.
Self-confessed 'royal nut' Anita Atkinson from County Durham is the proud owner of 7,000 royal items including jugs, tea towels and flags spanning 200 years.
Items date back to 1760 - with her most prized possession being a framed napkin that was used by Prince Charles during a flight.
Anita's collection is said to be worth more than her house - which is estimated to be worth £203,000.
But the royal historian insists she will never sell the collection as she hopes to pass it down the generations.
Anita has since updated her royal museum - located on an old dairy farm - to include a tribute to Prince Philip.
She had showcased some of the memorabilia built up over the years including portraits, books, coronation tins and jubilee mugs.

Kuspe is a Sydney-based dance music Producer/DJ. The genres he makes are mainly different forms of house/dance/trance music. A lot of his songs have been made in conjunction with his girlfriend, Paris Galanis, who is a vocalist. They've made varying forms of dance music in their own style.
He started messing around with music software at the age of 13 and learnt to make a different, harder and faster kind of music called “hardstyle” with a close buddy of mine. To which Kuspe & Paris actually got pretty far with it as a duo, performing our music in festivals and clubs at only the age of 16.
