That 90s Spider-Man Show

Spider-Noir S1 review and Brand New Day conspiracies...

Nicolas Cage brings Spider-Man Noir to live action, and we're still a little bewildered that this is the timeline we live in. There's some pros to praise, cons to criticise, and a welcome excuse to discuss one of cinema's strangest, boldest, and unique actors. We also talk about the roles Cage turned down, including... the Green Goblin?

And while we're here, we chat about our expectations for SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY before its release this summer. Is it Man-Spider O'Clock... once more??

Superheroes are done. But first, some TV to talk about:

THE BOYS are back in town! DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN S2 gives us faith in a higher power! INVINCIBLE S4 continues to traumatise! PUNISHER: ONE LAST KILL sees Frank not follow through on his subtitle, and... why not Dolph Lundgren's THE PUNISHER (1989) while we're at it?

We blitz through some reviews of the above in a meandering conversation (what did you expect?), discus the release of new cryptocurrency FISKOIN, and wonder what exactly Jon Bernthal's writing process is like.

Apologies for any Billy Butcher cameos. Oh, and keep an eye out for a Spider-Noir review in the near future.

"You can go to the sewers AFTER you go to the hospital"

Season 4 Episode 9 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is "The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson"

trigger warning for this episode: suicide references [plot relevant!]

Join Henry and Jack to the haunted caverns beneath Mary Jane's ill-advised new movie production in the 50th episode of TAS! Fresh off of inter-dimensional trauma, MJ is playing a secret agent on the big screen while Aunt Anna is presumably tied to a chair in a basement somewhere. But how does Mysterio factor into this? How will Jack connect this to David Lynch's filmography? What horrifying advice will Henry provide our dear listeners? And why does Mary Jane keep getting tricked by her ghost dad?

For our comic book segment, Jack informs Henry of Mysterio's death in 90s comics, as well as some other bizarre facts about Quentin Beck's role in Spider-Man lore in the modern era...

"This is the Kraven juice, it'll make you into Kraven"

"We prayed for the Dark Universe to die but the monkey's paw curled and we got this instead"

It's finally come... The Year of Kraven has lasted longer than 365 days and featured very little Kraven, but now we have come together to review his cinematic debut. Is it terrible? You bet. But HOW is it terrible? That's the real question.

We are joined this week by Gene Aversa to talk about what went wrong with the Kraven movie and the demise of the Sony Expanded Universe. We also rank the Sonyverse movies, from 'what are they doing?' to 'what am I doing watching this?'.

Additionally, we talk about some of the recent updates on the next movie that actually stars Peter Parker - Spider-Man: Brand New Day!

Oh so you thought we were done with weird lore bs corner, huh? Done with obscure animal-themed villains? Not a chance.

"This is much closer to Leprechaun In The Hood than I thought it was gonna be"

This week Jack introduces Henry to creations that are rumoured to appear in the next Spider-Verse movie. One is the dinosaur man known as Stegron, a one-track scientific mind who is a sucker for a nap. The other is The Human Fly, JJ's most embarrassing project who only becomes more disgusting over time.

We speedran this recording to make way for a much-requested and dreaded episode on a certain Sonyverse movie. See you soon.

"So undercooked I think I got salmonella from watching"

Season 4 Episode 8 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is "The Return of the Green Goblin"

An iconic villain returns. Yes, that's right. Aunt Anna is back and she's enlisting help from gun-totting strangers she meets in cemeteries to take down Peter Parker once and for all. Also, the Green Goblin is here.

Comic Origins: Jack gives an overview on Harry Osborn's descent into goblin madness, what adaptations have worked, and gives some story recommendations.

X-Men '97 continued the story from X-Men: The Animated Series, which is like the slightly cooler older sibling of our primary focus on this podcast. So of course we were going to talk about it when they brought it back to life. It wasn't really gone, just having an intergalactic romance with space royalty elsewhere.

We, however, are a little late to the homecoming. Jack watched it as it came out, while Henry was a late bloomer catching up this year. Together, we are too disorganised to regularly release episodes. Like an X-Men team run by two Morphs.

This episode we talk about every episode of the new series (some spoiler-free thoughts up top before we get into it), the fan reaction, what's in the cards for season two, and what this means for a potential comeback of Spider-Man TAS. Also... we like Gambit now???

"It's a 500 Days of Blade situation"

Season 4 Episode 7 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is "The Vampire Queen"

Part two of our vampire caper means that's (hopefully) a season wrap on Morbius. But before he attempts to make it big in a cancelled pilot spin-off, he's teaming up with the gang to take down a new hypnotic vampire on the scene: Blade's mum!

Some comic book origins this week: Jack gives us a little backstory for Vanessa Brooks before diving into Debra Whitman's comic counterpart: a tale of gaslighting, psychotic episodes, and a few reasons to not date Peter Parker.

Extra cut convo from our recent episode for being too darn long a tangent.

Finally... we can get Victor Von Doom, the romani man who used science and sorcery to become Marvel's greatest villain put to page, can be done right. OR we could cast Robert Downey Jr, because that is the safest ($80 million) bet. The big news from Marvel out of SDCC this year was that RDJ has been cast as ol' Doom.

Well, we don't like it! We have plenty of reasons to be sceptical, so maybe skip this one if you don't want to hear two guys get pedantic about your favourite actor being cast. Maybe people who like this decision listen to this podcast; we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we could do without.
