3.00" Henrik Wetter Sanchez, Principal at UK based Playfair Capital VC tells us about the Irish companies they have invested in, the types and sizes of the companies they will invest in, and those that they definitely will not. Cheque sizes start at €100,000 but can run to millions, they receive 2,000 website applications a year. He says that they read absolutely every one of them. The key is to keep it short, short and short (no more than TEN SLIDES as more will not be read). The tough news though is that only six companies a year make the final cut. But like TeamGBS alums ProtexAI, your company could be one of them. So long as your business is not into gambling (one of a shortlist of sectors they don't touch on ethical rounds). One of his favourite investments is RecycleEye (and we'd love to have them on the podcast).

Gary Gallagher, co-founder Optahaul, says his early stage, but revenue generating, software company OptaHaul, can make money from working out the best route to bring milk to creamery, proving again there's the business in the most obscure of activities. The 2nd biggest cost in milk production can be haulage and he says he can save up to 30% of that cost. His software is applicable across Europe and he's had unrequested (but very welcome!) inquiries from the US and South America. He's currently funding, so if you know the industry, it's well worth a listen.

Ruth is looking for employers who want to offer their employees a highly-affordable perk, looking after their health, always.

Ciaran O'Mara and Dan Hobbs, founders of Limerick based Protex AI, have completed the Y-Combinator programme (though they'll explain why they didn't make it to San Francisco) and have gone on to raise $18 million for their 18 month old (yes, fewer than 600 days!) company. They're going BIG in Canada and now heading for the US, to take on the US, from their 26 person HQ in Dublin. Their company all grew out of a terrible accident. That led to chats with 200 health and safety experts to see if their software, that can help avoid accidents, had an application. They say 'it's easy to think outside the box if you've never been inside it'.

How do they find potential clients? LinkedIn. (They took the 'free trial' to another level!). The two lads explain how not to have your thinking curtailed to Ireland. What they learned from Y-Combinator was view the entire world as your market - 'Why not?' they say. It forces you to think BIG.

Dr. Mary-Liz Trant, Director of the National Apprenticeship Office on why she wanted to be a carpenter but was never offered that apprenticeship. She explains all about the 66 national programmes, including an apprenticeship in tree surgery - a growing business! There's also an apprenticeship that leads to a PhD in engineering (awarded by University of Limerick). Construction apprenticeships plummeted from 8,000 to 1,000 post the Big Financial Crash. Mary-Liz explains how SMEs can benefit from apprenticeship schemes. There's an online form that she says will respond 'immediately' and there are financial benefits. New apprenticeships being launched soon, will include immersive technology (AI etc) and another in cybersecurity as well as data analytics. There's also talk about an apprenticeship programme in clothes manufacturing.

Episode 109 features three great women, three great entrepreneurs.

Tracey Moran talks about her family business, the oh, so famous Red Cow Morans Hotel (she even suggests where the name came from...), she talks about the new Wren Urban Nest hotel situated near Dublin's Grafton Street (and she says she welcomes pitches from local businesses with sustainable products or services that she may be able to use). And that's not all. As we often say on #TeamGBS, if you want something done, then give it to someone busy to do. That's why she also is heading up (with others) the Inside Out Camps, for young adolescents, to help them cope. Her first camp is based in Dublin, but she's keen to spread then nationwide.

The Local Enterprise Offices sent us two amazing women, and it's no surprise the LEO's are so keen on them. Both early stage companies have already gone international, and both sing and shout the praises of what the LEOs did for them, and what they could do for you. Sinead Crowther set up her business, Tonstix - they're sucky lollipops for sore throats -, over a Christmas period when she was going through a divorce, had quit her job and while one of her four children had suffered a serious accident. Her story, including being the first in her family to do her Leaving Cert, is AM-AZ-ING.

Equally, Lisa Geoghegan, founder of Sonallife, is life affirming. You can't but smile when Lisa talks the hind leg off you. She's a born salesperson - something it seems she learnt from car dealer dad who runs a highly successful business, 'based in the middle of nowhere' according to Lisa. Lisa's company specialises in 'making communities' and developers pay her to do it. It's a clever, clever idea, so much so that she's in talks with CBRE in Australia with a view to bringing her idea to the other side of the world. And she's developed an app to keep her communities together. She'll make you smile.
