  • John Smith Visits That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/8-UnSRXlG8I
Well this was a turn up for the books. Blinking once again into the dawn light of our own ignorance, Dan and I are awakened to the immense talents of Mr John Smith. We have Simon to thank – he and John are friends – for this most auspicious and fortuitous happening.
John’s unique blend of British folk and Americana hits the sweetest of spots on our radar. A fingerstyle master, slide supremo, accomplished songwriter and utterly compelling vocalist, we feel privileged to welcome him to Schwangri-La where we get to hang out, talk guitars, build a board and get treated to our own performance of three songs. It’s a day we’ll never forget… at least until the next time he comes back, which he surely must!
Yes, we know the show was about two hours shorter than it should have been. Children needed to be collected, flights caught and all that life stuff. The important thing was that we got the board built for his tour. He WILL be back!
I’d just like to add – Mick here – all those tracks were first takes, straight out of the gate. Colour us impressed, deeply moved and forever inspired!
For everything John, please head to https://www.johnsmithjohnsmith.com/
The tracks he plays are:• 'Joanna' (from the album Headlong, 2017)• 'Winter' (from the album The Fox And The Monk, 2006/2010)• 'Hares On The Mountain' (from the album Hummingbird, 2018)

  • 11 Cool Ways To Use A Compressor Pedal – That Pedal Show
This is the audio of our video here: https://youtu.be/hlrvMG9X8KU
In this episode we deliver on a clickbaity title in only the way That Pedal Show can – well over an hour of something somebody half our age could do in about 10 minutes with loads of jump cuts AND boundless enthusiasm. Not here sunshine…
Nevertheless, these are 11 ideas for using a compressor pedal, taking in some general compressor knowledge along the way as well as hearing a bunch of different compressor types. Somewhat surprisingly there is slide, bass and enough funk to sink a modest lilo. Some come on baby, let’s squash…

  • Mark Lettieri Visits That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/ui2LVpvaVmU
In this episode we are delighted to welcome the wonderful Mark Lettieri to the show! Mark is highly loved and respected musician based in Fort Worth, Texas, who has built a stellar reputation via his work in Snarky Puppy, Fearless Flyers and his own solo work.
We met Mark back in January at the NAMM show and fixed a plan for him to drop into the TPS studio on his next trip to Europe. Thusly, he stepped off a plane from Dallas and into a car to Somerset! We talk a little bit about Mark’s background in music, his uncanny ability for groove and rhythm and of course the pedalboard he flies with. Plus a little cameo from Joey Landreth at the end - yep he was here that day too. Quite the day!
For everything Mark Lettieri including his current tour dates, please check out: https://www.marklettieri.com/Also check out Snarky Puppy: https://snarkypuppy.com/

  • Joey Landreth Board & Tones 2019
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/6pSE-Eyd2sY
In this episode we are delighted to welcome back Joey Landreth – songwriter supreme, guitarist extraordinaire and human being of tremendous awesomeness. Joey first appeared on the show back in February 2017 – https://youtu.be/dSreFRxL2go – when we were introduced to his unique and utterly compelling style. He returned later that year to blow our minds with a show on harmonic tremolo – https://youtu.be/FDRHDy9GI-M – and again in August 2018 with the wonderful Kirk Fletcher – https://youtu.be/WspUxDSoDu0Why do we keep inviting Joey back? Simples: we are beyond proud to call him our friend and we love hanging out. We also think his insight, musicianship and all-round Canadianness is a good thing for the world, so we want to share it as much as possible. In this show, Joey had just finished the European leg of his Hindsight tour, in support of his 2019 album release, Hindsight. Please go and buy it somewhere and/or go see him live! For more on Joey, including upcoming tour dates please visit his site http://www.joeylandreth.com/Enjoy the episode. And all the cape capers.

  • How Does DC Voltage Affect Pedal Sound? That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/NxH9jK3Ujgk
In this episode we dig into the world of DC voltage and what it means for pedal operation and sound. Let’s begin with a warning and please forgive the upper case.
PLEASE ONLY USE THE VOLTAGE STATED EXPLICITLY IN THE PEDAL MANUAL AND NOTHING ELSE!
This is because most pedals are designed to run on a specific voltage: usually 9V DC for most stompboxes. However, some pedals are designed to work on varying voltages, usually between 9 and 18 volts and sometimes up to 24. It will say so in the pedal manual or on the manufacturer website. If i doesn’t, don’t do it. Dead pedals are often smelly and always useless for everything except throwing at bandmates for playing the wrong parts. (DUCK!)Moving on, it is also possible to starve a pedal of voltage until it gets to the point where it simply won’t work. This is a key characteristic of certain fuzz sounds. So we get into all that in the video and some of the side issues and discussions. Please enjoy the show…

  • Dave Gregory: 12 Strings, XTC & More!
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/EYVgr7NCYEY
In this episode we are delighted to welcome Dave Gregory to the TPS studio. Dave has garnered much praise and respect for his work in British rock band XTC from 1979 to the late 1990s. Melodic, creative and always moving forwards, Dave’s playing inspired a whole generation of guitarists, not least a young and eager Australian with long, flowing blonde hair and a penchant for elaborate inversions. Yes, in a tale of ingenuity and daring, the Australian dreamt of leaving the endless sunshine, free-flowing beer and barbys so that he might be nearer to his hero. In Swindon.
10,000 miles and much alopecia later the Australian tracked down Gregory in Wiltshire and persuaded him to join his band, Tin Spirits, whereupon the fairytale was complete. He even asked him to be a guest on his YouTube channel along with a trio of Rickenbacker 12-strings, a Strat and an ES-335.

Well that’s one reading of it anyway. Enjoy the show!
