  • What Are Ambient Tones Anyway? – That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our vide here: https://youtu.be/Yp61VmZM3q8
In this episode we dip a very tentative toe into the deep waters of ‘ambient’ sounds in guitar. As we discuss, putting labels on music is problematic from the off… but to us ‘ambient’ guitar is about building textures using combinations of delay and reverb, then manipulating those further with anything from modulation to pitch shifting to synthesis to looping etc etc etc… anything you can think of, basically. Soundscapes, textures, ambience, mood.
Covering a whole movement in a hour seems at best foolish but this is That Pedal Show after all, where our sole intention is to spark some inspiration and questions in your minds for things you might like to try. So let’s see if that happens…
If you like the backing track used in this video (we’ve called it ‘Ambiphoria’ and it was made by Fraser our assistant, predominantly with the Chase Bliss Audio Mood and Empress Zoia), it is available from That Pedal Show Store. https://www.thatpedalshowstore.com/collections/downloads

  • Synth Sounds For Guitar – That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/RpgAOPPHjTg
In this video we discuss synth sounds for guitar… but not in the MIDI-pickup-to-trigger-samples sense. Nope, here we’re talking about waveforms, oscillators, filters, modulation, manipulation and all that. The pedal everybody is talking about (in 2019) is the Meris Enzo, and for good measure we add the new SY-1 from Boss – the first Compact sized pedal to offer synthesis with no MIDI pickup required. Plus some others.
Join us as we stumble through some sounds, ask and answer questions and hopefully trigger some creative ideas and possibilities for your own music journey. This is guitar, Jim, but maybe not as you know it.Enjoy the episode!

  • Gain Pedals In Parallel – That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/7ACGOxWspeA
In this episode we explore the useful and inspiring possibilities offered by parallel gain staging… among various other tangential observances. Most of us are familiar with series signal chains because that’s what happens when you connect any two pedals together: one flows into the other. Parallel is where the signal is split before two effects, then hits them separately and is mixed back together again afterwards. You might think that combining two pedals would produce the same results however you connect them. Well, not so, as we discover.
For anyone asking how to combine two pedals in parallel and what you might need to do so…The Wetter Box by TheGigRig can do this. We’re not sure about other stuff, but whatever you choose, you need to be able to split the signal before the two devices you want to mix in parallel… then mix them together again afterwards.
    Enjoy the episode!

Our agenda is purely to plug them in, see what cool sounds and features we find, and combine them in whatever way inspires. That’s it! Enjoy…
PLEASE NOTE: We recently changed the PnM format to include jamming/backing tracks. This one was filmed before that… and then got delayed because TC delayed the release of the Flashback 2 x 4. So that’s why there’s no backing track and/or jamming. All future PnMs will have backing tracks. And we’re renaming them Pedal Jams.
Another bit of interesting info is that this was the day that we decided we didn’t need two mics on the cabs any more. New Sontronics Delta 2 ribbon mics arrived. We used them and took the Neumanns out of the mix. We had the Neumanns there before to balance out whatever other mics we were using. The Delta 2s sound great on their own.
    Meantime, enjoy the episode!

  • Solo Tones: Thoughts On Gain, EQ & Audibility - That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our vide here:  https://youtu.be/3ftRqEQV8Dg
In this episode we stumble around a general discussion on being heard when playing solos. A friend of Dan’s had asked him what he needed to think about tonally when starting to play guitar solos: it sparked an idea for a show.
Many of the concepts we touch on here have been covered in previous episodes, but they’re always worth a re-look for the already-initiated and close to invaluable for anyone new to the subject. Gain, EQ, volume… and a bit on delay, rounded up with five tips for better solo tones. Enjoy the episode!

  • Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander & UAD OX – That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/xWx9yqWmV5o
In this episode we take our first long look at – and listen to – the new-for-2019 Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander, next to the already established Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box.Both are designed to offer much increased functionality and low-volume usability/direct recording potential for your existing valve amplifier. As we discuss, however, while they’re ostensibly pitched head-to-head there are nonetheless some significant differences that may make your decision much easier, should you be in the market for such a beast. No, it’s not a straight A/B comparison using exactly the same amps and guitars – as we said they do different things – it’s more of a general overview of their main functions and features and associated tagentalities and observationalisations. We start by hearing the straight attenuation capabilities before heading for the direct sounds.

  • 10 Tone Ideas For Rhythm Guitar
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/lEsnMNK6F68
Are you struggling for somewhere to sit in the mix? Are you and the other guitar player clashing sonically and/or harmonically? If so, young Daniel and I offer up these 10 ideas for you try when playing ‘rhythm’ guitar. As we have opined many times, ‘rhythm’ guitar is a bit of a catch-all term. To us they're just parts in songs, nevertheless this show isn’t about how to nail your Nile Rodgers funk chops, or achieve seamless synchronicity like Malcolm and Angus. Moreover it’s about some tonal suggestions that will bring interest and separation to parts in a song. We talk about volume, EQ, modulation and delay for the most part, to act as springboards for your own perfect dive into the music. Wow, that was cheesy.
If you like backing track in this episode you can buy it at That Pedal Show Store.
