  • Spring Reverb – That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/ljv0hymTx60
In this video we drip slowly into the tank of spring reverb. Among the oldest effects anywhere – not least for guitar – a classic spring reverb uses a physical tank, in which sit a number of real springs with an input transducer at one end and an output transducer at the other. Audio goes in, excites the springs, and the resultant sound is swathed in ambience. We love it.
However, not all amps have spring reverb – or any reverb at all all for that matter– so what options exist for you to add to your rig? Thus we compare three genuine spring-equipped outboard units with some more compact digital takes on the spring reverb sound. Let’s get washy, baby…
A note on the Anasounds tanks. If you’re at all confused which one you’re hearing, you can see the red and white cables plugged in to the tank being used at the top of the screen.
We’d also like to apologise for the aural confusion caused by talking over the reverb trails. One day before the end of time, Dan will learn that he has to let the reverb die before talking. Imagine the thing that annoys you the most. Then times that by 100. Danish Pete says he has a solution… but they don’t use room mics. I’ll stop moaning now, but I’m not answering any comments on it because I’m tired to almost-death of explaining it over and over again. The voice mics are gained waaaaaay louder than the amp mics, so the amps are waaaaaay louder through the voice mics than through the amp mics. You bring the voice mics up because Dan starts talking, and then the sound of the reverb is unrealistically loud, negating the point of doing a reverb demo because you can't hear the trails properly. I’m going for a valium and lie-down. Mick here.

  • Big Vs Mini Pedals – That Pedal Show
This is the audio to our video here: https://youtu.be/0RCQTEvj7P4
In this episode we take a first step into a question that gets asked all the time. Well, a couple questions actually: what’s all the fuss about mini pedals, and are they as good as the big versions?
So in this, erm, not exactly rigorously scientific examination, we schwang through some sounds courtesy of five pairs of pedals in regular and small formats to hear what we think. We will revisit this using some other kinds of pedals in the future, and maybe even do a mini pedals challenge. In the meantime, enjoy this episode!

  • Strymon Volante Has Landed – That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/tNHZhIWPSBU
In this video we welcome perhaps the most anticipated pedal of 2019: the Strymon Volante. Strymon of course has enjoyed phenomenal success with its delay pedals to date, particularly the genre-defining TimeLine and much-loved El Capistan. The Volante adds a whole new voice to Strymon’s echo choir, namely the vintage, multi-head drum echo sound made famous by the Binson Echorec. It also does multi-head tape and studio tape delays too. Matters arising…• Does it sound like those old units? We have a couple for a quick comparison.• What about the best of the modern, pedal format versions of those effects? We pick two for comparison.• Should I replace my TimeLine or El Capistan?• And what else does it do?
Please note: There have been many, many different kinds of tape and drum echoes over the years, and they pretty much all sound different, not least with the passage of time / different states of repair etc etc etc. With that in mind, we picked two such beasts that we had at our disposal, so please don’t be posting comments moaning about why we didn’t compare it with this, that or the other. Please.
We hope you enjoy this episode…

  • Transistor & Valve Amps Wet Dry: Quilter & BluGuitar
This is the audio from our YouTube video here:https://youtu.be/2Yy7sPVyVUs
Dan and I are both dyed-in-the-wool valve amp fans – unashamedly and unapologetically so, based on decades of their use and abuse. In this show however, we follow last week’s realisation (for us at least) that transistor amps really have moved forwards in recent years. There comes a time in every tube-amp-fan’s life when they need to listen to the best of the latest solid-state amps to hear what’s changed… Watch last week’s episode here: https://youtu.be/_QZOeXHB8AQ
Here we move along a little bit, pairing a Quilter 101 Reverb and BluGuitar Amp 1 with a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and head deeper into wet-dry territory on the end of Mick’s pedalboard. No real agenda, no science, just the same question we have all the time: can these sounds offer the requisite inspiration to really play?
The signal routing of Mick’s board is as follows, top to bottom (specific pedal links further below)
Wah wah (outside of G2)G2 loop 1: Analog Man Sun Face FuzzG2 loop 2: Fulltone OctafuzzG2 loop 3: J Rockett The Dude ODG2 loop 4: Analog Man / Maxon OD9G2 loop 5: Klon CentaurG2 loop 6: Wet/dry split to GigRig Humdinger. Main out to DRY amp. Buffered out to…Also G2 loop 6: Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe DelayG2 loop 7: Boss DC-2w Dimension CG2 loop 8: Analog Man ARDX 20 delayG2 loop 9: Supro TremoloG2 loop 10: Neo Instruments Mini Vent II (rotary speaker)G2 output 1 to wet amp
Loop 6 stays on all the time so the dry amp is always on. The Belle Epoch Deluxe is also always on to cure a phase reversal problem when you switch it on and off. The delay level is controlled with the Dunlop Mini Volume X pedal to the left of G2.
The little green box with the LCD readout is the Amazeo controller for the Analog Man delay. It uses control voltages to create modulation and offer tap tempo.
    Enjoy!
