  • Reappraising Modern Transistor Amps #1
This is the audio from our YouTube video here:https://youtu.be/_QZOeXHB8AQ
In this video we revisit a contentious subject for TPS: transistor amps. Dan and I have never been fans, based on those we’ve owned and played to date. Before you accuse us of snobbery, it's a matter of pure personal opinion – clearly, loads of people LOVE them.
However, we’ve played a few things recently that have perked up the ears. Roland’s JC-40, the new Boss Nextone amps and also the Amp1 Mercury Edition by Thomas Blug in particular. So in this episode we compare the Nextone with an AC15 and a Hot Rod Deluxe, as well as having a listen to the Amp 1 with Thomas. (For the record The Amp1 uses a Nanotube in conjunction with the class D output stage, but it’s nothing like a traditional valve amp. At all.)In part 2 (next Friday), we’ll add a Quilter 101 Reverb and more Blug Amp 1 and head into wet-dry territory. We hope we can move the debate along. Just as there are valve amps we like a lot and not so much, so there are transistor amps likewise. We’d like to add a couple of our faves to the TPS arsenal and use them alongside everything else. I will answer this here, so I don’t have to do it 18 thousand times in the comments (Mick here)…Q: Why didn’t we explore the drive sounds in Nextone or Amp1? A: Dan and I use cleaner, higher headroom amps for our rigs/boards/TPS in general, and we’re looking at the Boss and BluGuitar products in that context.
    Enjoy!

  • Wet-Dry & Wet-Dry-Wet Setups Explained – That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/bSz7GrRdHc0
Regular viewers will know that Dan and I are big fans of the wet-dry rig. According to our definition at least, that means using two amplifiers where one of them gets signal from ALL of your pedals including reverbs and delays (wet), while the other gets only the drives (dry). And maybe compression. And maybe modulation depending on how you like it.
It’s a very simple concept… until you get into the nuts and bolts of signal routing, signal splits, phase and isolation, whereupon the confusion can come along all too quickly.
So this video attempts to break all of that down and – with the help of a diagram or two - we hope to demystify things.
Once we’ve talked about wet-dry, we add a third amp for wet-dry-wet. All the principles are the same, so it shouldn’t be too much of a brain stretch. Finally you have a use for those unloved 'other' amps you have kicking around. Or a great excuse to buy one or two more. :0) Enjoy!

  • Uni-Vibe Sounds & Questions
This is the audio from our YouTube video of 11 Jan 2019. https://youtu.be/Te97X_WBRyQ

In this episode Dan and I ask and answer some common questions about classic Vibe style pedals. The original Uni-Vibe pedal first appeared in 1968, introduced by Japanese company Shin-ei and released in the US by Univox, erm, according to Wikipedia. The name Uni-Vibe is now a trademark of Dunlop Manufacturing Inc.
The Uni-Vibe sound was immortalised into rock history by Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower among others and has since become a staple of many pedalboards. It’s a four-stage phaser that uses light dependent resistors around a bulb to creates a unique modulation effect that's kinda part phaser, kinda part chorus and definitely all magic.Join us as we dial in a bunch of sounds and mess with settings and pedalboard position to help you on you quest for the perfect vibe tone. Let’s pulse and throb baby…

  • Using Pedals & Loops With Gainy Amps – That Pedal Show
This is the audio from our YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/8LW_v-U5QV0
In this episode we meander through what seems to be a huge point of discussion with a lot of people: using pedals with overdriven amps. As regular viewers will know, Dan and I tend to use cleaner / higher headroom amps for the basis on which to stack different gain sounds from pedals. However, lots of people really like the sound of an overdriven amp… which is where the ‘problems’ really start when adding pedals. We run through comparisons of using common gain pedal types into contrasting amps: one clean/high headroom and one heavily overdriven to try to shed some light on the issues you may be having. And of course the discussion would not be complete without discussing delay and reverb into either the front of the amp, or the loop. As always, there really are no answers, just better questions, and what we hope to arm you with here is simply a better understanding of the various gain stacking relationships you will encounter when using pedals with amps.
If you’re at any point confused which amp you’re hearing: Amp 1 lit on G2 means it’s the Hiwatt. Amp 2 lit means it’s the Victory. Enjoy!
