The 1609 Podcast episodes

  • S2E38: Are Millennials Killing 12Ks?

We covered that question and more this week, from the LA 2028 budget to a Russian athlete receiving a 12(!) year doping ban. We talked more about how track is failing to find mainstream success and how to fix that, plus more talk on Mo Farah and Hoka's Carbon X project. Finally, we vowed to release one entire food-related episode if one listener will assemble and consume some food on video.

  • S2E37: London Marathon Recap

This week, we reviewed the results of the Battle of London—uh, I mean the London Marathon. We got to talk about a lot of different parts of the race and their implications.

We also happened to record on the day that the CAS ruling was released. We talked extensively about this largely due to the amount of bad information we had seen reported about the case from major non-running news outlets.

While we did profess some opinions about the ruling, the major goal we had was to establish what the basic facts of the situation are so that both we and our listeners could correct bad information when it was presented in the future. We tried to approach the situation respectfully and broadly, without further contributing to the invasions of privacy that some athletes have had to endure for the better part of a decade. We certainly hope that's what we did. If we got something wrong, please let us know.

  • S2E36: Mo Farah Has a Beef with People and Gravity

Oh yes, that's right, we recorded in time to cover both the drama happening between Sir Mo and Haile Gebreselassie AND the weird decision he made to get on the bouncy treadmill mere days before the London Marathon. We also talked Kiprop, Allie Kieffer's coaching change, Michael Norman, and Shalane Flanagan. And some NEXT% shoe takes, obvi.

  • S2E35: A Little Race Up in New England

We tell terrible worn out jokes. We talk about a few races. Alex gets jalapeño juice in her eye. What else could you ask for?

  • S2E34: Rupp, Recaps, and Rotten Weather

We had a number of races to talk about this week, including some recaps of shorter races and a kind of preview of Boston, plus Rupp is running again and Boston looks like it's going to be terrible again this year but maybe not quite as horrible. We made predictions this year!

  • S2E33: Garrett Zatlin and The Stride Report

Woohoo! Interview episode! This week, Garrett Zatlin was kind enough to join us to talk about a whole host of pro news. Up first: the Xuzhao Marathon, World Cross recap and a couple of seriously fast 10ks. We also covered some positive doping news, April fools jokes from the running world, some ultrarunning news, and then we finally got to the interview.

You can find Garrett at The Stride Report and on Twitter and Instagram.

  • S2E32: Two Russias Stories and World XC Overview

We finally had something new to talk about this week! There were three great emails, TWO new Coburnspiracies, two stories about Russia, and one very quick overview of what to expect at World XC, which will likely have already concluded by the time you listen to this (which is why we didn't do a full preview).

  • S2E31: The One Where We Yell at USATF (pt. 74)

It was sure nice to get the name of this episode figured out ahead of time. Luckily for you, we didn't spend the entire episode soapboxing again. We also talked about one of the closest championship wins you could ever imagine, the relatively disastrous Bahrain Night Half Marathon, the United Airlines NYC Half results, and Carl Lewis saying he could have run the 40 under 4 seconds. At that point, we waded back into the USATF/IAAF cesspool and covered a few interesting articles that made the rounds this week from Toni Reavis, Deadspin, and Flotrack. Plus, we got a great email from former pod guest Roger.

Continuing out Miles to Trials series, we talked with Zach Ornelas, the current USATF 50 km Road Champion and Olympic Trials Qualifier. We talked about his running history and got to go really in-depth on his last few years of racing, plus a great story about how he won that 50 km road race earlier this month.
