The 415ers

Today on The 415ers, host Evan Giddings and Marc Grandi continue to react to the 2022-2023 NFL season that saw the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles and look ahead to next season for the San Francisco 49ers.

Before any talk of a Super Bowl, however, the 49ers need to address some holes on their coaching staff. Another assistant is leaving Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco to join DeMeco Ryans in Houston. How will Shanahan fill this opening and what are his core principles when it comes to staff building? Is his cabinet becoming bare? How does he continue to replenish a staff that other franchises are constantly plucking from?

Plus, a number of 49ers were on hand at last week's NFL Honors show. Nick Bosa won AP Defensive Player of the Year and DeMeco Ryans won AP Assistant Coach of the Year. But both Kyle Shanahan and Christian McCaffrey finished second in their respective categories. Who was the bigger snub: Shanahan for AP Head Coach of the Year or McCaffrey for AP Comeback Player of the Year?

Today on The 415ers, hosts Evan Giddings and Marc Grandi react to Super Bowl LVII, which saw Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs beat Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.

(2:55) Members of the San Francisco 49ers, who lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game, spent a lot of time over the last two weeks directing some talk at Philadelphia. Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, and even Robbie Gould all had something to say. Was the result of the Super Bowl enough to back up the 49ers' talk?

(14:51) San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan watched the Super Bowl last night, most likely from the comfort of his own home. What should he have been making note of? What could he have learned from Nick Sirianni's shortcomings and Andy Reid's second half? How might Shanahan use this Super Bowl as a stepping stone for himself? Plus, the guys break down the epic start to Patrick Mahomes' career and debate where he stacks up amongst the greats of the game.

(36:51) With an eye on Mahomes' and Hurts' performances in the Super Bowl, the guys ask the following question: what is Kyle Shanahan missing? What is keeping him from winning a Super Bowl, despite being very close multiple times. Is it as simple as needing an elite quarterback? Also, when it comes to great coach-QB relationships, is it a chicken-or-the-egg situation? Can Shanahan help make an elite quarterback or is it the other way around?

Today on The 415ers, hosts Evan Giddings and Marc Grandi discuss a busy week for San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks and the newest member of the team's coaching staff.

(2:20) Brock Purdy has reportedly settled on February 22nd as the date for his UCL surgery, which is still expected to be just the repair and not the full Tommy John procedure. However, what's with the timing of the surgery? Why is the surgery still nearly two weeks away? Even if he recovers as expected, Purdy would miss most of training camp. And what happens if his recovery isn't smooth?

(17:23) The guys also discuss Trey Lance, who's been on the media circuit down in Phoenix ahead of the Super Bowl. Has Lance ever said a bad thing about anyone? Has he ever slipped up? He continues to say all of the right things -- whether it's about his teammates, his mindset, or anything else. Does that impact your belief in his ability to play quarterback?

(33:09) The 49ers hired former Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks to be their next defensive coordinator. How does he fit in Santa Clara and why were the 49ers attracted to him? The guys also discuss the reported falling out between Jimmy Garoppolo and Kyle Shanahan, but can you really blame Garoppolo? Wouldn't you be frustrated, too, if you were in his shoes?
