  • transgender boxing a woman
Despite outcries from anti-trans celebrities and politicians, the International Olympic Committee confirmed Imane Khelif is eligible to compete in women's boxing at the Paris Games.
Khelif went viral on social media after winning her opening bout Thursday against Italy's Angela Carini, who stopped fighting after 46 seconds. Khelif, along with Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, were both disqualified from their championships in 2023 after the International Boxing Association said they failed gender eligibility testing, a move that the IOC has called a “sudden and arbitrary decision."

  • Kamala Harris Megan the stallion
Megan the stallion had a message for the women in the crowd at the Georgia State Convocation Center in Atlanta as she performed her hit single “Body” at Vice President Kamala Harris’ first campaign rally in the city as the Democratic Party’s presumptive 2024 nominee. Donning a blue pantsuit, cropped blazer, and tie, the three-time Grammy winner performed a number of tracks, though slightly toned down for the event. “Now I know my ladies in the crowd love their bodies,” she said. “And you want to keep loving your body — you know who to vote for!” Performing the “Savage” remix of the song, she added to the crowd that “real savages” vote. “I’m so happy to be here Atlanta! We’re about to make history with the first female president,” she added. “The first Black female president! Let’s get this done!”

  • Olympic games wokeism
Da Vinci’s painting depicts the moment when Jesus Christ declared that an apostle would betray him. The scene during Friday’s ceremony featured DJ and producer Barbara Butch — an LGBTQ+ icon — flanked by drag artists and dancers.Religious conservatives from around the world decried the segment, with the French Catholic Church’s conference of bishops deploring “scenes of derision” that they said made a mockery of Christianity — a sentiment echoed by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova. The Anglican Communion in Egypt expressed its “deep regret” Sunday, saying the ceremony could cause the IOC to “lose its distinctive sporting identity and its humanitarian message.”
The ceremony’s artistic director Thomas Jolly had distanced his scene from any “Last Supper” parallels after the ceremony, saying it was meant to celebrate diversity and pay tribute to feasting and French gastronomy. Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps was asked about the outcry during an International Olympic Committee news conference on Sunday.

Residents of one Paris neighborhood say they passed on the Opening Ceremony after being overlooked
“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. On the contrary, I think (with) Thomas Jolly, we really did try to celebrate community tolerance,” Descamps said. “Looking at the result of the polls that we shared, we believe that this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense we are, of course, really, really sorry.”
Jolly explained his intentions to The Associated Press after the ceremony.
“My wish isn’t to be subversive, nor to mock or to shock,” Jolly said. “Most of all, I wanted to send a message of love, a message of inclusion and not at all to divide.”
