How To Face Tough Stuff (10% Happier Self Care Journey) 12/26/19
° We suffer because we think something is either a total mistake OR that there's some grand "predestined" purpose for what's happening in our lives. You choose the purpose based on your response to your experience.
° Acceptance is the key to peace.
° Meditation and mindfulness teaches you how to feel feelings without being overwhelmed by them.
° There's not always rhyme and reason to why things happen in our lives. If we think the stress in our life is a mistake or that something has gone wrong rather than attending to what's happening we'll get stuck in the story. Stress is apart of life and resisting it just creates more tension and stress. (Sebene Selassie)
° Cultivating the ability to be with discomfort and allow the feelings that come with stress allows us to be with all experiences in our lives more fully.
° Ask yourself "what's happening?". Name and acknowledge the emotion accompanying the stress without attaching the story to it, over analyzing it or moving to problem solving. Just be with it.
° Try to stay with what's arising, even if it's uncomfortable knowing that you're building the capacity to tolerate what's unpleasant in order to adapt and grow.
° If the discomfort becomes to much take deep breaths to relax the body.
° Asking yourself "Can I be with this?" helps to broaden your perspectives about what you're feeling.
° Ask yourself "Can I appreciate what I'm feeling".
° Take the time to appreciate yourself each time you spend a few minutes being mindful, meditating or breathing deeply.
Stress Is Your Ally (10% Happier Self Care Journey) 12/25/19
* Not all stress is debilitating. Some lower levels help you to perform better, be more aware and alert and have energy.
* Science shows that changing your mindset about stress can literally change your physiology.
* Thinking about a time where you were stressed and rise to the occasion is one way to reverse your bodies response allowing you to turn debilitating stress into energy to succeed.
* Feeling stressed is a sign that you care about something.
* When experiencing stress ask yourself the questions:
* What am I stressed about?
* Why do I care?
* Is there an opportunity inherently in this.
* Remember your first line of defense against stress is taking a deep breath.
Pyrophobia is a fear of fire, which can be considered irrational if beyond what is considered normal. This phobia is ancient and primordial, perhaps since mankind's discovery of fire.
One of my favorite words right now.
Norepinephrine - A Word A Day 12/23/19
Also called noradrenaline, substance that is released predominantly from the ends of sympathetic nerve fibres and that acts to increase the force of skeletal muscle contraction and the rate and force of contraction of the heart.
The Science Of Stress
10% Happier Self Care Journey - 12/23/19 Notes
° Adrenaline increases your heart rate preparing you for action.
° Breathing speeds up to increase oxygen to the brain
° Norepinephrine - another hormone similar to adrenaline is released to increase arousal and energy.
° Cortisol increases sugar level giving extra energy.
° Cortisol also curbs functions that would be nonessential or detrimental in a fight-or-flight situation
° Stress hormones are natural and in the right circumstances can be life saving.
° If we learn to "lean into" the feeling of stress instead of running away from it it won't own us and we can use the experience to make better decisions.
° Bringing awareness to the body and out of the head can help us to deescalate.
° Learning to "feel" the body can help us to separate the reality of what's going on from the mental loop or story going on in our heads.
