  • #119 Ship Selection - On The Yard (009)

    Send us Fan Mail

Ever wondered what happens during that exciting night when Naval Academy midshipmen discover which ship they'll serve on after graduation? Ship selection night is one of the coolest traditions at the Academy, and understanding this process gives families incredible insight into their midshipman's future naval career.

As someone who's witnessed the evolution of this incredible event, I'm excited to share the behind-the-scenes details of ship selection. From the energy-packed atmosphere in Alumni Hall to the strategic decisions midshipmen make when choosing their first assignment, this episode reveals everything you need to know about this pivotal moment.

The Blue Chip Program and International Opportunities

One of the most fascinating aspects involves the blue chip program, where outstanding midshipmen can secure guaranteed positions on ships they've served aboard during summer training. We'll also examine the coveted Forward Deployed Naval Forces positions in Japan and Spain, complete with ceremonial sword presentations for the first selectees.

    Strategic Factors in Ship Selection

Choosing a ship involves much more than picking a cool name. Midshipmen consider home port locations, operational schedules, ship culture, and even classified briefings about future deployments. These decisions shape their entire naval experience, from qualification timelines to quality of life.

    What This Means for Families

    • Questions to ask about their ship selection priorities
    • Understanding the results of their choice
    • Appreciating the research and planning that goes into each selection

Whether your midshipman is heading toward surface warfare or you're simply curious about Naval Academy traditions, this episode provides valuable perspective on one of the most significant nights in a midshipman's Academy experience. The energy, strategy, and celebration surrounding ship selection perfectly capture the excitement of transitioning from midshipman to naval officer.

  • #118 The "Golden" Handshake: A Deep Dive Into the Graduate Non-Commission Experience

    Send us Fan Mail

When midshipmen reach graduation day but cannot commission due to medical reasons, they face what's called the "golden handshake" - but it's not as golden as the name may indicate. In this powerful episode, we explore the reality of Graduate Non-Commission (GNC) midshipmen and the support they desperately need.

My friend Christian Blanchard shares his deeply personal story of finding out just two weeks before graduation that he wouldn't commission as a Marine Corps officer due to a seizure and epilepsy diagnosis. His journey from devastation to recovery reveals the gaps in support for these midshipmen who fall through the cracks.

    Understanding the GNC Experience

We examine what happens when your entire identity is wrapped up in becoming a military officer, only to have that dream shattered at the last moment. Christian's story illuminates the emotional and psychological impact of losing your planned career path

    Academy Insider Pathways Program Launch

This episode also announces our new initiative to support GNC midshipmen through their transition. We've assembled an incredible network of Naval Academy graduates offering:

    • Community connections through Cedric Williams' Blue Magnet platform
    • Professional resume building with Andrew Shea's Operation MOS program
    • Complimentary headshots from photographer Laura Hatcher
    • Career and life coaching from executive coach Jeff Cervello
    • Pro bono VA disability representation from attorney Chris and Homefront Group

    A Call to Our Community

This isn't just about one midshipman's story - it's about the handful of graduates every year who need our support. If you know someone facing this situation, connect them with Academy Insider so we can help them land more softly in their next chapter.

Karl shares his remarkable experience of living and operating in Spain, Japan, and Italy—not as temporary deployments, but as permanent duty stations. From sailing in the Black Sea alongside Russian naval forces to conducting Taiwan Strait transits in the South China Sea, his story reveals what it means to be truly "in the fight" as a surface warfare officer.

  • #115 VGEP explained: Start Your Masters while at the Naval Academy

    Send us Fan Mail

Ever wondered how you could earn a master's degree while still at the Naval Academy? Meet the Voluntary Graduate Education Program (VGEP) - a hidden gem that most midshipmen never hear about unless someone specifically tells them it exists.

In this episode, I sit down with Karl Marvil, a Surface Warfare Officer currently stationed in Naples, Italy, who completed the VGEP program at Georgetown University. Karl shares the inside scoop on this unique opportunity that allows academically strong midshipmen to start graduate school during their final semester at Navy.

What Makes VGEP Different from Other Graduate Programs

Unlike the highly competitive IGEP program reserved for the top 10% of the class, VGEP offers a more accessible path to graduate education. We explore the specific requirements, including the need for a 3.0 GPA, completing your bachelor's degree in three and a half years, and finding a program within driving distance of Annapolis.

Karl walks us through his experience balancing midshipman life with graduate coursework, from carpooling to Georgetown with his cohort to managing military duties alongside evening classes. You'll discover how the Academy supports VGEP participants and the unique flexibility this program offers.

    Strategic Considerations for Future Midshipmen

We discuss the critical decision-making process around course validation and how it impacts your ability to participate in programs like VGEP. Karl provides honest perspectives on when validation makes sense and when it might create unnecessary academic pressure during plebe year.

  • #112 Army Week: Now vs Then

    Send us Fan Mail

Why Army Week at the Naval Academy Becomes Pure Chaos Every December

Army Week has arrived at the Naval Academy, and if you've ever wondered what all the chaos and excitement is about, this episode pulls back the curtain on one of the most legendary weeks in Annapolis.

As someone who lived through the absolute mayhem of Army Week during my time as a midshipman, I'm sharing the inside story of what makes this week so special - and so completely wild. From the tactical pranks in King Hall to the elaborate spirit missions across the Yard, Army Week represents a unique tradition that has evolved significantly over the years.

What Makes Army Week So Legendary

    • The historical context behind the week leading up to the Army-Navy game
    • How Army Week differs from Air Force Week and why this rivalry runs deeper
    • The three main areas where Army Week chaos unfolds: King Hall, Bancroft Hall, and the Yard
    • Why this week has always been a time for creative midshipman expression

    Army Week Then vs. Now

I'll walk you through some of the most memorable traditions from my era, including the infamous "Princess Leia" prank and the tactical escapes through King Hall. But I'm also addressing how things have changed - including the recent installation of security cameras throughout Bancroft Hall and updated standard operating procedures that govern what's allowed.

    Stories You Won't Believe

    • Epic chases through King Hall during meal times
    • The strategic planning behind successful pranks and escape routes
    • Creative spirit missions involving everything from alarm clocks to water balloons
    • How plebes would get "carry on" privileges for the week

    Modern Army Week Evolution

While some of the more destructive traditions have been phased out for safety and appropriateness, midshipmen continue finding creative ways to honor the spirit of Army Week. I'll share examples of recent pranks that maintain the tradition while respecting current guidelines.

What This Means for Your Family

Whether your midshipman is experiencing their first Army Week or you're trying to understand the stories they're sharing, this episode provides the context you need. I'll give you the background to ask better questions and understand the unique culture that makes the Naval Academy experience so memorable.

Army Week represents something deeper than just pranks - it's about tradition, creativity, and the bonds formed through shared experiences. While the specifics may change, the spirit of this incredible week continues to thrive in Annapolis.

Get ready to understand why Army Week remains one of the most talked-about traditions at the Naval Academy, and why your midshipman will remember these days for the rest of their lives!
