A Dublin woman who rescued an Indian man from a mob of teenagers who beat him, stripped him and stole from him has said he was “left for dead”.

Gardaí are investigating a “racially motivated” attack that took place at Parkhill Lawns, Kilnamanagh, on July 19 at around 6pm.

The group of attackers falsely accused the man of acting inappropriately around children before and after he was set upon.

Jennifer Murray, from Tallaght, says that the victim, who said he arrived in Ireland just weeks ago, kept asking, “Please help me, ma’am” when she went to his aid.

Jennifer was driving in Kilnamanagh, an area of Tallaght, when she came across the scene and pulled over her car to help.

A garda has suffered multiple stab wounds following an unprovoked knife attack in Dublin city centre yesterday evening.

One man aged in his 20s is in custody following the incident.

The officer, who was on routine patrol in the city, suffered puncture wounds to his side. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is “recovering well” and expected to be discharged, a Garda spokesperson said.

One of Ireland’s leading obesity specialists has claimed the ‘hijacking’ of the weight loss treatments by the beauty industry has led to an increase in hospitalisations. 

The licensing of weight loss drugs has been widely hailed them as a “game changer” in the fight against obesity. 

However, Professor Donal O’Shea warned their arrival is not unalloyed good news and cautioned that they are now “widespread” in beauty salons.

A Louth councillor has called for a database to be set up, listing volunteer water search and rescue groups across the county.

Drogheda councillor, Debbie McCole, submitted a motion to the July meeting of Louth County Council, “noting the recent deaths from drowning and calls from Water Safety Ireland for heightened vigilance around water.”

Donald Trump has given Russia “10 or 12 days” to reach a peace deal with Ukraine.

The US president slashed the 50-day deadline he had issued to Moscow earlier this month to end Europe’s biggest war since 1945 or face

“severe” tariffs on its trade.

Ukraine welcomed Mr Trump’s intention to bring the deadline forward by almost a month and his admission he was “very disappointed” by Russian president Vladimir Putin and “not so interested in talking [to him] any more”.

Animal welfare charities say they are under “constant pressure” due to a significant increase in cases of animal neglect since the pandemic.

Chief Inspector for the ISPCA, Conor Dowling, said there has been a rise in animal neglect due to a “lasting fallout from Covid and the lockdowns” when dog ownership and breeding increased. 

“The last few years have been the busiest we’ve encountered. It’s been a struggle to keep up with the demand”, he told The Journal, adding that ISPCA dog shelters are so tight for space they can only take urgent cases of neglect.

Dowling said the “double whammy” of problems – more dog welfare issues, but also an overpopulation of dogs – was making it incredibly challenging to rehome dogs.

A military tribunal in Lebanon has sentenced to death a man accused of killing Irish soldier Seán Rooney, according to Lebanese news reports.

A United Nations peacekeeping force was targeted in an attack on their UN vehicle in the village of at Al-Aqbiya, Lebanon, in December 2022.

Private Rooney and a number of his colleagues were injured in the attack. Pte Rooney later died. The men were part of a convoy travelling to

Beirut Airport.

A military tribunal in the Lebanese capital of Beirut sentenced the main defendant in the case, Mohammad Ayyad, to death, according to local

reports.

The agreement of an outline trade deal between the EU and the US has one main advantage – it avoids an imminent tariff war between the two sides which could have gotten nasty.

However, sources say it will take some time to work out the full impact of the deal on Ireland. And there is no doubt that the EU has conceded on a number of points to the US and that this comes with some considerable economic cost. The argument from Brussels will be that this is a price worth paying.

Football fans should not have to pay road tolls this weekend as they travel up to watch Kerry versus Donegal in the All-Ireland Final in Croke Park, according to Michael Healy Rae.

The Kerry TD and Junior Minister suggested that the removal of motorway tolls would reduce traffic on the roads and the financial burden on fans.
