We are joined on The Agenda this morning by local businessman and Collon resident, Stephen, who says that his home is being targeted by people who think it is being used for IPAS accommodation. 

Stephen contacted LMFM yesterday, saying: 

“My house has been mistakenly identified as an IPAS centre housing migrants.

Some local idiot going to work last Thursday saw a dozen of my employees waiting outside my gate on the roadside for taxis to bring them to the airport as they were going home for holidays.

Posts have been put up on the IPAS Resistance Facebook page and the online Liberal.ie copied and reposted the article on their social media and website.

Now people are regularly letting fireworks off in my house and throwing stones at it. My wife and children are scared every evening and an Garda Siochana can do little to help.

We are in need of help and awareness”.

The price of groceries in Irish supermarkets is now climbing at its fastest level in almost two years with the rate of inflation put at 6.5 per cent in the 12 months to early October.

According to retail analysts Worldpanel by Numerator, the last time prices were recorded increasing at this rate was December 2023.

Worldpanel also noted the absence of one-off relief measures for Irish consumers in the budget and said that was likely to have an impact in the run up to Christmas with “extra pressure” likely to be felt by families struggling to make ends meet.

The mother of Paul Quinn, murdered by a gang 18 years ago this week, has called for those with information to “give us justice”.

This week marked the 18th anniversary of the 21-year-old’s brutal killing by a group of men in a farm shed in Tullycanus, Co Monaghan.

Breege Quinn has asked that her son not be forgotten and for justice to finally be served.

Ireland was rocked by the killing of the young man on Saturday, October 20, 2007. Mr Quinn, from Cullyhanna, Co Armagh, was beaten to death by a gang of around a dozen men. He had been lured to the shed by a number of men and the investigation into his murder is ongoing.

The murder took place during a sensitive time of the Northern Ireland peace process, just months after the power-sharing government was restored.

Paul's mum Breege joined us on The Agenda this morning and she broke down on air while making a very emotional plea for ‘justice’ 18 years after his killing.

Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys both condemned the violence seen in Citywest on Tuesday night, as the final debate of the presidential campaign saw questions on bank repossessions, Donald Trump and fox hunting.

The final televised debate last night, hosted on RTÉ’s Prime Time, saw the two candidates face off ahead of polling day on Friday.

On the riots in Citywest, Ms Humphreys said the violence was “absolutely horrific”. She said:  Ireland needed immigrants to come in to work in hospitals and care services, but people who come here illegally should be processed and sent home in they do not have the right to be here.

Meanwhile, Ms Connolly said the scenes in Citywest were “very upsetting” and “deeply disturbing”.

She added there needed to be an analysis of what happened.

It's been suggested more frequent rent reviews could be the solution to reducing the amount of rent arrears owed to Louth County Council.

The local authority is owed more than €4 million and over 1,000 of its tenants owe 12 weeks rent or more.

At the Dundalk Municipal District's monthly meeting, Sinn Féin's Kevin Meenan also called for extra staff to be allocated to carry out the reviews to ensure tenants aren't caught out over a change in their circumstances which can put them in arrears.

The Táinaste has condemned the “violent attacks” on gardaí during last night’s rioting outside the Citywest complex in west Dublin which has so far led to the arrest of six people.

Gardaí are investigating the violence, which saw a garda van set alight and demonstrators launching bricks, glass bottles and fireworks at garda members. The riot followed a protest organised in the wake of the alleged sexual assault of a young girl in the area in recent days.

Following a recent visit to the Cooley Peninsula and meeting with local farmers IFA President Francie Gorman has said there is a lot of concern about the proposed Dundalk to Carlingford Greenway project planned by Louth County Council.

With a decision due, farmers in Cooley say they are worried that their farms may be severed or have their lands subject to a Compulsory Purchase Order.

In a statement the IFA said they were "totally opposed to the use of CPOs for Greenways and also opposed to the severance of farms for such projects. It’s also very clear Louth County Council does not have the support of the local community for such measures.
