What is Christian Rock? Where did it come from? Was it always so worship-y? Today on a very special episode of The Album Concept Hour, we're going to be answering all of those questions for you. Brad has teased his background in the Christian music industry before and with the help of his close friend and 2nd/3rd mother, Kathy Taylor from the Give Me 1 Reason podcast, they are going to compare notes on their experiences with the Christian music industry they each grew up with... And to get into that properly, we need to start at the beginning... The first Christian Rock band to stand shoulder to shoulder with other Classic Rock artists of the time... Rez Band (or Resurrection Band). With reformed hippie, Glenn Kaiser and Wendi, his wife with the outstanding voice, at the front as a Christian power couple, along with great musicians backing them in Stu Heiss, Roy Montroy, and John Herrin, they completely changed how Christians looked at music moving forward. They represented a shifting tide in American Christianity and were part of a new wave of hippie/Christian hybrids. Coming from the world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Glenn Kaiser was able to capture the spirit of rock, while infusing it with his newly found spiritual beliefs and turn it into great Rock along the way.

Today we get a chance to talk to Denver musician Scott Uhl about his project Spiral Cell and the 2016 debut album "The Maze in the Tree Rings". Scott is a one man band, mostly using loops to fill out his recordings and live shows, but gets assistance from musician friends when he needs it. In his debut as the masked figure behind Spiral Cell, Scott delivers a fully fleshed out space opera in "The Maze in the Tree Rings", complete with astronauts, robot therapists, and a grim future where you are only a number. Playing with a variety of genres, he creates his own epic sci fi soundscape with a mystery at the center of it all. Join Brad and Jon as they do their best to get through the maze in the tree rings...

There are three Kings in the history of the blues. There's the fairly well known B.B. King, the lesser known but influential Albert King (most well known for his song/album "Born Under a Bad Sign"), and then there's Freddie King: the "Texas Cannonball", who influenced his own group of electric blues musicians to include some of their Texas sound. In the 1950s, the blues had some considerable growth, with blues guitarists moving out of the Delta blues scene and into the Chicago blues scene and changing some conventions of the genre along the way. But by 1961, rock 'n' roll music had taken off in popularity and made a lot of [white] people money, starting to overshadow the blues that had created it, leaving behind many blues legends. However, the blues was far from dead. In the 1960s a lot of US music was being exported all over the world, not unlike K-Pop from South Korea. It was at this time that American blues was becoming more fully appreciated in Japan and Europe, resulting in the "British Invasion" of rock music, where blues had once again completely reshaped popular music. One of the essential albums for any 1960s electric guitarist was "Let's Hide Away and Dance Away," by Freddie King. With it his guitar talent is on full display, being an instrumental album and you can hear the impact he has on music for years to come.

It's the end of Inspector 34 month and we have none other than Patrick Auclair, guitarist & pedal operator of the band, and today we have a very special episode with some heavier-than-usual content. Just a small trigger warning, we are going to be talking about predatory behavior towards minors and although we try not to get graphic, we are discussing real world events about the lead singer, Jesse Lacey, and their impact on the lyrics on this album, some of which, with the context of the victims stories, can come across as disturbing.

Today we have a very frank discussion about the difficulties of separating the art from the artist. Sometimes, it's very east to separate the two. Some lyricists don't put much of their personal lives into their work and their lyrics can stand on their own merit. But some write from a very personal place, pouring out a journal on top of their music. In the early 2000s, 'emo' music was all about being as emotional and in your face about it as possible. The music landscape involved countless variations on the "woe is me" trope, complete with nautical themes, and many wrote directly about experiences with depression and shame. Which brings me to Brand New. With the context of knowing Jesse Lacey gaslit and solicited nude photos from underage girls in the early 2000s, the art, which is largely biographical, changed. Knowing that the shame felt throughout "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me" was because he finally realized how fundamentally screwed up he was for the abhorrent things he did changed how I will listen to this album forever. It's still one of the best sounding albums of the time, but we can't ignore the skeletons if they're not in the closet anymore, and we decided it would be better to talk about it!

Today we have perhaps the greatest (and possibly only) indie-lofi-folk-punk all star team up of all time (change my mind). To start off we have Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum singing so simple and sweet... followed by fellow Neutral Milk alum, and master of the musical saw, Julian Koster, and their producer from "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", and inventor of the non-Pythagorean pitch scale, Robert Schneider. The last had nothing to do with Neutral Milk, but was important to indie folk at the time: Kevin Barnes from a little band called Of Montreal. They were all part of the Elephant 6 Collective, an indie record label that produced much of the indie-lofi-folk-punk from the 90s to 00s. In 2001, after the unexpected success of "In the Aeroplane...", Mangum and the gang decided to take a step back from conventional songwriting, and create something truly conceptual & out there, and very psychedelic. It was a soundtrack for a movie that didn't yet exist. And the movie was a trip. With the short film of the album release in 2008, you gleaned some context, but overall, for both iterations there's a lot to unpack. I definitely recommend watching the short film in the description if at any point you are lost with what we're saying...

"The Elektra staff had changed completely. They had fired the guy who signed us, and basically everybody else, including the president. They brought in this whole new staff whose introduction to Ween was 12 Golden Country Greats. With them not knowing us, they didn’t know if it was a put-on. A lot of people have so many misconceptions about that record. I think they thought it was our way to get out of the deal, which wasn’t the case at all. It was something we were proud of and love, plus we had The Mollusk about to drop. They had no idea what to do with the country record, so then it came time for The Mollusk, we were thinking, “This is our greatest record.” We mastered it with Howie Weinberg, sent it in, and I didn’t hear from Elektra for two weeks. I finally called the A&R guy, because the suspense was killing me. I said, “What do you think of the new record?” And he said, “What new record?” I yelled, “The new record! The Mollusk!” I heard him fumbling around on his desk and he said, “Oh, here it is.” He hadn’t even listened to it for two weeks! At that point, I knew the fucking record was doomed. Jesus Christ! They just gave us two huge advances, and we delivered two albums. I don’t know if they thought we were trying to put them on a second time, or someone mentioned, “Those guys did a nautical record.” I was so pissed! This was the best thing we’ve ever done, and they didn’t even care!"

Meat Loaf is one of a kind rock legend. Teamed up with Jim Steinman, they forever changed the landscape of rock with the greatest rock opera of all time: "Bat out of Hell". Like his character in The Rock Horror Picture Show come to life, Meat Loaf took to the stage like... well, like a bat out of hell. His vocal range was astounding and his energy was much bigger than any frontman at the time. With fluffy shirt and handkerchief in hand, he was not your typical rockstar. "Bat out of Hell" took the world by storm, and he was an overnight sensation. It was truly a one of a kind fusion of a sound, frequently replicated since then, but rarely as good. However, in 1979, Meat Loaf was crushed by the weight of the fame, and wasn't able to get back up to that level of notoriety for over a decade.

Austin Powers. Malcolm in the Middle. Looney Tunes. Blues Clues. Istanbul (not Constantinople). What do all of these things have in common? No, it's not that they all include slapstick gags, it's that they have all had songs from the quintessential art rock group, They Might Be Giants. Whatever strangely themed music they made, the level of production mastery they brought to it was undeniable. “Boss of Me”, the theme for Malcolm in the Middle was so good that they even parodied it's style in the 2000s sitcom episode of WandaVision. In 1990, however, they were still on their rise to the giants that we know them as today. They had gained the respect of college radio and MTV, and their most recent album “Lincoln” had a #11 on the US Modern Rock chart with “Ana Ng”. With “Flood”, They Might Be Giants had their first big budget major label release, having signed to Elektra Records, and they did not waste a second of it. With the odd beauty of “Birdhouse in Your Soul” and the outright catchiness of their The Four Lads cover “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” (which was used in a Looney Tunes cartoon), they won over a mainstream audience, earning them a platinum album.

Today we are starting a MONTH (or so) of the members of Inspector 34 as guests! We're getting them each on individually to talk about an album that they love and we're starting with their keyboardist, Silas Price! He tells us about his other projects Fomosurfer and Pleasure Center and we talk about how They Might Be Giants influenced his own music. Bands reinvent themselves all the time. After several albums under a particular theme or persona, you just want to do something different. You want the world to perceive you different. Maybe the previous style is still working, but it's not giving the band the satisfaction they need. But rarely do you take a hugely successful debut album and follow it up with a completely different sound. While it still has some of the dancy/synthy elements of "Hot Fuss", "Sam's Town" completely shifts the look and tone of The Killers from glitzy young Vegas boys with beautifully poppy rock--to grimy old cowboys with grittier production and heavier lyrics. It took them from the realm of one hit wonder to being part of the fabric of modern rock music. Although it initially got mixed reviews, once the shock of the drastic change in style wore off, critics found themselves revisiting "Sam's Town" and appreciating the change. It also revealed more of who The Killers were and where they came from, and it forever changed how they wrote music... Today we have Brad, Jon, and Jake "The Snake" Foster!
