Alright I'm going to keep this description short and sweet, like a good Misfits song. They're the quintessential horror pop band. Glenn Danzig is the original lead singer and is a wild m-fer and after cycling through all the available musicians in the Queens punk scene, just decided to do his own thing. Static Age (this freakin album) was mostly recorded in 1978 at C.I. Recordings, but it was too friggin scary and raw for the record execs to understand, so they just released the songs into a bunch of comps and E.P.s instead. Cut to 1996. The Misfits are finally getting some cred. They release a boxset with a bunch of other shit and most of this album and decided "what the fuck, let's just release the whole damn thing" and so they finally released Static Age in it's entirety for the first time in 1997, a full nineteen years after it was recorded. No wonder these guys are so violent.

The year is 2002. Rap music is still on it's skyrocket to mainstream appreciation. Death Row and Def Jam had major success in the 90s and Rock-A-Fella was the new kid on the block that would take rap to the top where it would stay. There were a lot of amazing mainstream rappers like 50 Cent, Ludacris, and Eminem, but rap was getting more and more glamorous, and some rappers wanted to stay grimey. Enter Def Juxx Records. Cofounded by El P and Amaechi Uzoigwe, this label was full of rappers with a different hip hop sound, and in 2002 they employed the efforts of Mr Lif. I, Phantom is the result of this connection.

Today we're joined by rapper/producer Evaridae (aka Zach Salvat), who shares with us some awesome new songs from his project Gallup. Also joined by Brad, Jon, and Dave as we attempt to discuss the album (which we may or may not have been successful at).

Today we have an exciting interview and exclusive sneak peek into Mommyheads' brand new album “Age of Isolation” with lead singer/guitarist and producer of the album, Adam Elk! Mommyheads have created some excellent music over the years, gaining attention in the 90s indie rock scene before grunge, coming up alongside bands like Weezer and Radiohead. There was seemingly only room for a few indie rock groups for the likes of MTV and VH1, and if you weren't those chosen few to break through the top 40 charts, it was easy to be overlooked. Ween, for example, experienced a lot of lukewarm responses to their music for being quirky and inconsistent with genre, not being fully appreciated until the proliferation of Spongebob Squarepants, a universe infamously inspired by their album “The Mollusk” (check out our ep about it here: https://anchor.fm/albumconcepthour/episodes/Ween---The-Mollusk-w-Alexandra-Derderian-euaf08/a-a55itrf). Mommyheads is one of those bands. They had their moment in the sun with their self-titled album released on Geffen Records, but as the radio got grungier and the beginnings of the rap-rock were peaking through, the labels were shifting tides. Mommyheads saw the writings on the wall and decided to go their separate ways in 1998, but in 2008, they were brought back together by original drummer, Jan Kotik's tragic death to cancer (in December 2007) and their subsequent tribute show to him. They enjoyed playing together again so much that they picked up where they left off and another decade or so later, they are still at it. Although they have yet to have their “Ocean Man” moment, they're continuing to make good music, and we definitely recommend you check out “Age of Isolation” at http://mommyheads.bandcamp.com!!!

We talked about the beginnings of American Christian Rock, with The Resurrection Band, and today we get into a Christian Rock group that continued that humble hippie-Christian approach, but decades later, in the 2000s, in a completely different context. Between the 70s and the 00s, the Christian music industry grew from a few psychedelic groups composed of former hippies to a fully fledged money making machine in the Reagan era. In the 80s, they tapped into the hair/glam metal trend with groups like Stryker and Petra--and by the 90s, every other youth pastor in America was taking their shot at being the next big thing in the conservative Christian music market. They even had their own greatest hits compilation to compete with "NOW that's what I call music" called "WOW". Christian families finally had their OWN music, and some of them started limiting what their children could listen to, opting out of "secular" (non-Christian) music altogether. This created a problem for young music loving Christians. They were only allowed to participate in music if it was "Christian" and "Christian" music... was pretty corny. It was always extremely apparent that the Christian messaging took precedence over interesting song structure or good songwriting. In the mid 90s, all Christian music sounded like worship tunes you would hear at the hip, new Evangelical Church down the road. Cut to somewhere in the 2000s. Emo, Screamo, Angst, 9/11... Teenagers were obviously dealing with a lot of stuff at the time and the sappy stuff just wasn't cutting it for Christian youth and they were sick of being pandered to. So, they started screaming with the rest of their friends. And pretty soon, there were so many bands from Christian backgrounds screaming and making metal and other interesting genres that the entire Christian music industry changed. Many of these bands saw the writing on the wall in how commercialized God had become and like JC in the old bible story, they started flippin tables. mewithoutYou is perhaps the greatest example of this shift in how bands expressed their spiritual beliefs. It's spacey, it's weird, there's yelling slam poetry, and it's not always sunshine and rainbows when they're talking about Christianity. They're getting into the nitty gritty...

Today we have our second guest from the Stranded Panda Podcast network and host of the Star Wars Universe Podcast and the Superhero Ethics podcast, Matthew Fox (AKA the ethical panda); and we're discussing a very important album to them, Weezer's 1994 debut album. Originally just untitled, it quickly became known as "Blue Album", as they continued on the untitled mono colored albums thing for a while, and it was a breath of fresh air. Following the popularity of grunge and nihilistic early 90s, everyone was listening to the Nirvanas and Pearl Jams of the day and happy-go-lucky pop tunes were extremely out of fashion. There was definitely pop punk occurring at the same time, but it was not the pop heavy dynamos of the late 90s/00s like Blink 182 and New Found Glory. In 1994 grunge was going through a tough time. In April, Kurt Cobain violently took his own life, and in June, Hole bassist Kristen Pfaff succumbed to a heroin overdose. But in the middle all of this tragedy and chaos (Blue album came out in May) in rock music, grunge was collapsing under its own weight, and there was one band that would take the baton and run with it. The guys in Weezer were anything but grunge. Sure they had some grungy guitar sounds, but they were influenced by Beach Boys more than Pixies... and could make a song like both. They were a group of nerds proud of their nerdiness and up front about how cringey love could be. They had the depth that grunge had, but with more of a sense of humor about themselves, which was incredibly important at the time. It's an amazingly well formed album for their first outing and (mostly) stands the test of time.

We're crossing another epic album off the list today with Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions". By the time this released in 1973, Wonder had already completed 15 albums (16 if you include his greatest hits) for the Tamia label on Motown Records. Coming off the heels of "Talking Book", he was already a completely realized artistic force and he had no intention of stopping any time soon. With "Innervisions" and the albums that succeeded it, he showed the world what this blind Motown kid was capable of, including playing most of the instruments for the recordings and exploring his artistic capabilities to the fullest. This is just one of several episodes of his greatest work that we will discuss more next time (whenever that may be).

It's our 3rd installment in killer children's movie soundtracks and of course we have back our soundtrack aficionados, Griffin and Alex Woodchicken to break down another time capsule of a soundtrack, designed perfectly for a child growing up in the 90s. That's right, it's possibly the greatest(?) children's soundtrack ever conceived by corporate America: the Digimon: the Movie soundtrack. Where the Transformers: the Movie soundtrack captured the essence of 80s power/hair metal and the Jetsons: the Movie soundtrack captured 80s electronic/pop, the Digimon: the Movie soundtrack captured a real amalgamation of popular 90s genres, from rap to surf rock to ska to rap/pop/rock(?), all interlaced with sick scratches on the turntables. It somehow has everything that the 90s was at the turn of the millennium without anything feeling out of place. It's like the Reese's of children's soundtracks. Just to name a few flavors, we have Barenaked Ladies, Smashmouth, and Fatboy Slim (and a truly epic “Digi-Rap”) on the front half of the album, and then Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Less Than Jake on the back half. Not to mention the 90s reimagining of 80s pop hit “Kids In America” that was hastily made to market directly to a young American audience (thematically having little to nothing to do with the movie, but can't lie, song was dope). Get ready to hear us at our absolute nerdiest, as Brad, Jon, Jake, Griff, and Alex discuss Digimon in more depth than anyone asked.
