Kendrick Lamar is easily the most well respected and influential rapper of the late 2000s/2010s. His studio albums are meticulously crafted and undeniable. He draws inspiration from jazz, funk, and all the forms of hip hop that preceded him, and he frequently delivers lines that cut deep and leave you scratching your head for weeks. His first two albums, Section 80 and Good Kid m.A.A.D. city are focused on inner city life and paint a vivid picture of his surroundings growing up and their themes and concepts are pretty straightforward. Then, in "To Pimp a Butterfly" he takes all of that and blends it into a more abstract version of it, complete with psychedelic elements. Finally, in his fourth studio album, DAMN., he soars to a level that is both abstract and transcendent. On it's surface, it's a pretty straightforward Kendrick album, but as you look closer and closer, it shows a kaleidoscope of possibilities.

After two long months of waiting, fans of Low Level Owl volume 1 finally got their finale in the form of it's companion piece Low Level Owl volume 2. This half is much more experimental and moody, but no less impactful than the first. Although there are less 'hits', this second release resonates with it's listener, as it's vague descriptions of life's hardships make it an incredibly personal experience. There's just enough of a narrative to push your mind into thoughts of unresolved angst, long lost loved ones, or the difficulties that we all face when we cross the threshold into adulthood. It really is emotional music at it's best, using a less ego driven approach to discuss emotional anguish than what came after it. I know some listeners drop off on part 2 of a double album, but this one is worth the wait. Brad and Dave theorize with Ben Birkinbine and they all discover something together.

Much like the lyrics in this album, I'll be brief. The 2000s were a strange time for rock music, and it was dominate by angst and sadness, epitomized by emo and nu metal. Much of this was understandably seen as immature and lacking some world-weariness, but there were a lot of groups that either were coming from the previous shoegaze wave of music, or that changed their tune after a few years of angst and understanding of themselves. The Appleseed cast is one of the quintessential bands in this category. Starting in the 90s, they are one of the predecessors of the 2000s emo movement in music and really show the depths of feeling that are possible to portray through reverb-cranked guitars, long spacey jams, and minimalistic vocals... And also the kickass drums... You can't forget the drums.

We've discussed the beginning of Outlaw country in the US with our episode about "Wanted: The Outlaws" from 1976 featuring the progenitors of the genre, Jessi Colter, Tompall Glaser, Waylon Jennings, & Willie Nelson. It was the greatest collaboration between Outlaw country artists ever. It was, that is, until just about a decade later. In 1985, Waylon and Willie finally took part in the next great Outlaw country team up, The Highwaymen. By that time they were legendary figures in music and decided to team up with a few more loners... Johnny Cash (of course), and the multi-talented Kris Kristofferson as the glue to hold them all together, being a huge fan of all of the others himself. These guys come together to make a great Outlaw country album in a decade that was largely disinterested in their style of songwriting and they show that they still have it. And it's not going anywhere.

(This is a podcast ep about cuttin' muffins.)

It has been 20 years since Adult Swim first graced our cable boxes, bringing us such absurd and weird programming as Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, and eventually The Brak Show Starring Brak (along with all those new ones all the kids are watching). But before it was the mainstay of comedy that it is now, it was just an idea to fill time. Utilizing the entire back-catalogue of Time Warner properties, a handful of very dedicated programmers at Cartoon Network designed a late night talk show for older kids and adults, resurrecting decades old characters to fill the various show roles, with Space Ghost as host giving self centered and bizarre interviews to celebrities. This was the beginning of late night adult-oriented animated comedy that wasn't structured like The Simpsons or a Saturday Morning Cartoon. It was awkward with absurdly timed bits and a dry anti-comedy that wasn't hugely popular at the time, but can be seen everywhere in comedy today... 

For the podcast today, we have the honor of having on one of those programmers that was in the room from the beginning of Adult Swim... co-creator of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, voice actor on shows such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Adventure Time, and Gravity Falls, AND the REAL DANG BRAK, Andy Merrill!!!!... oh, and we discuss the insanity that is Christmas in the Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album... (with a special appearance by Jon Bon Jovi)

It's the third week of Spooktober so we are throwing down the gauntlet with the most terrifying concept of all... the NIGHT! Listen, friggin terrified, as we take a deep dive into Billy Corgan's nightmarish mind, with songs like... Stumbleine, a sweet acoustic number where Corgan spells a word wrong... or the hellish nostalgia-fueled 1979, where they sing about all the best times they had as kids... huh... well those might not seem that scary, but what about the hair-raising tones of Beautiful?... Ok, so these aren't the scariest Smashing Pumpkins songs. In fact, they may be the tamest one's in there discography, with the exception of the ear-shredding X.Y.U. and Tales of a Scorched Earth.

Today we also have a Smashing Pumpkins mega fan, and lead singer/guitarist of The Felix Culpa, Marky Hladish on the podcast to guide us through which songs slap and which are ok to skip on the Twilight to Starlight side of Mellon Collie. Marky has made some of Brad's favorite ever music and got a lot of inspiration from the Smashing Pumpkins, even recording a cover of "Tonight, Tonight" for a Smashing Pumpkins tribute record very early on in their music career. (special thanks to Ross for the clip)
