There are so many of our friends, family and podcast ohana who have had to cancel or postpone trips to Maui due to Covid. It’s all so disappointing (and frustrating), and we’ve tried to think of a way to bring little reminders of Maui to your front door. We’ve added some of our favorite Maui products to the store at The Aloha 360, and we’re sharing them on the podcast & You Tube on this episode.

There are some new updates regarding travel within Hawaii and additional restrictions, specifically on Oahu, that were announced today. Also, we made a spontaneous, surprise trip to Kipahulu yesterday. It was so refreshing to drive through remote, east Maui to take in the quiet, beautiful and almost deserted Hana Highway.

Hurricane Douglas has passed, and we are all still standing! The eye of the hurricane passed within 30 miles of Maui shoreline, but the island was spared the heavy wind and flooding rains that were expected. We’ll share how we prepared for the storm over the weekend.

At the time of this recording, we are 72 hours out from Hurricane Douglas, which is making a straight shot toward Maui County. We’ll share some ways we’re planning to prepare and what we’re being told to expect as the hurricane approaches. We hope this isn’t yet another “setback!”

Kipahulu is a coastal district about 10 miles south of Hana town. It’s known for it’s organic farms, waterfalls and dramatic coastline. Kipahulu is home to one of the two entrances to Haleakala National Park. (We covered the park in Episode 149). It’s also home to two of our off-the-beaten-paths picks for your Road to Hana experience: Palapapa Ho’omau Church, which is the burial site of aviator Charles Lindbergh, and Laulima Farms, a locally owned organic farm and farmstand.

More news became available this past week regarding the State of Hawaii reopening to travelers. Specifically, beginning August 1 any person arriving into the state will not have to fulfill the 14 day quarantine if they have a negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours of arrival. We have more details and other reopening news on today’s episode.

The Road to Hana journey is like an adventurous crescendo that culminates in an epic hike to 400 ft tall Waimoku Falls deep in the rainforest. Haleakala National Park in Kipahulu is also home to the famous Pools of Oheo, an enchanting bamboo forest, restroom facilities, a nice visitor center, and camping. We’ll cover it all on this episode.

There are several stops that are beautiful, enjoyable and down right relaxing just past Hana town. Venture with us beyond Hana to Koki Beach, Hamoa Beach and Wailua Falls on this episode. Even if your itinerary doesn’t involved driving the whole back side around Haleakala from Hana, these are easily accessible places that should be on your list. Also, Wailua Falls is your last chance to swim in a waterfall!
