Lopez, a native of Nogales Arizona, at 21, was elected as mayor of his hometown, becoming one of the youngest mayors in the country. Elected twice as mayor, the son of Mexican immigrants who came to the United States some 50 years ago, was selected by Governor Janet Napolitano to serve as the Director of the Arizona Department of Commerce where he oversaw critical trade relationships in the state.

Later he joined the Obama Administration, where he oversaw a $13 billion budget and 60,000 people. In 2011, Lopez left the administration to start his own small business in Arizona. Over the past ten years his company has brought high speed internet to 1 million low income families and is on track to create 15,000 jobs right here in Arizona.

TAG'S guest is Martha Redbone is a Native and African-American vocalist, songwriter, composer, educator.

This 5-2-22 ENCORE BROADCAST was first aired in 2018, prior to Redbone's concert at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix.

Listen in as we discuss her life's journey; upbringing, musical influences and and more.

Redbone is known for her unique gumbo of folk, blues and gospel from her childhood in Harlan County, Kentucky infused with the eclectic grit of pre-gentrified Brooklyn. Inheriting the powerful vocal range of her gospel-singing African American father and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Cherokee/Shawnee/Choctaw culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of American Roots music. With songs and storytelling that share her life experience as a Native and Black woman and mother in the new millennium, Redbone gives voice to issues of social justice, bridging traditions from past to present, connecting cultures, and celebrating the human spirit.

Redbone’s recent work has been predominantly in Theater. Redbone is the Composer of Original Music and Score for the 2019 revival “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf”, choreopoem by the late Ntozake Shange, where Redbone honors the author’s 1976 classic by intertwining her original compositions celebrating the music of the African American diaspora with the beautiful choreography of Tony Award-nominee Camille A. Brown at the Public Theater, NYC.
 Redbone is currently in development with her own new work “Black Mountain Women” at The Public Theater.

It is a timely musical about the ongoing environmental destruction of her ancestral homeland in Appalachia told through the lives of 4 generations of women in her matriarchal Cherokee family.

Join experts who will discuss what would be the impact of the overturning Roe on Asian American Pacific Islander Women.

Speakers include: Congresswoman Judy Chu, D-California, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, D-Washington, Sung Yeon Choimorrow, Executive Director, The National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, Aliza Kazmi, Co Executive Director, HEART Women and Girls; John C. Yang, President and Executive Director, Asian Americans Advancing Justice—AAJC. AAPI Women have largely remained invisible in the divisive fight over abortion rights.

The Supreme Court is preparing to release its opinion on the Dobbs vs. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization case. The Court’s decision—a draft of which was leaked a few weeks ago—is expected to immediately gut abortions in at least 22 states.

At this briefing, panelists will discuss the impact of the expected Supreme Court decision on AAPI women and communities.

He is one of a growing number of commentators to warn that - as both sides keep raising the stakes - the danger of nuclear confrontation grows. 

How real is the threat? Who is most vulnerable if the Russians use tactical nuclear weapons? What is the debate over what the US can do to mitigate the threat or how the US should respond? TAGS we examine climate change and droughts across the country and the world, through a press briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services, titled  “Not a Drop to Drink: California Faces the Worst Drought in 1,200 Years” through a press briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services. 

Climate change has affected water availability in Arizona, California and around the world. Lake Powell, the second largest reservoir in the U.S., is at it's lowest level in decades. Mesa Arizona recently declared a "Stage One Water Shortage" awareness management plan. California’s snowpack is now at 39 percent of its average, signaling a deepening of the drought, which is already the worst in the western United States in 1,200 years. 

They will discuss the impact of climate change on the drought, conservation efforts undertaken by the state, the $1 billion hit to California's agricultural industry, and how other countries are managing their own water crises.

Panelists include: Karina Herrera, environmental scientist at at WCRB, will discuss the state's conservation efforts and the impact of climate change.

Dr. Josue Medellin-Azuara, Associate Professor, School of Engineering, UC Merced, will discuss the impact of the drought on California's agricultural economy.

Dr. Rajendra Shende, Chairman of TERRE Policy Center and former director of the United Nations Environment Programme, was coordinating lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, will discuss innovations/policies in other countries to be water-smart and drought-resilient.

Sean de Guzman, PE, MS, Manager of the Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Unit at the California Department of Water Resources, will discuss diminishing snowpack levels, a key determinant of California's drought.

Heather Cooley, Director of Research at the Pacific Institute, will discuss the national implications of the drought, and solutions for effective water management.

Join us on this segment of TAGS as we examine “The Worsening Mental Health of America's Children” through a press briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services. A recent CDC report on a survey of high school students revealed that 55.1% describe suffering emotional abuse, 44.2% reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness and 9% attempted suicide. 

Different groups suffered a bit differently, according to the survey: more young women and LGBTQ+ youth saw a rise in suicidal behavior, more Asian kids confronted racism and hate, more Black youth and Native Americans experienced hunger and economic devastation and along with Latinos, suffered the mental stress of the effects of the pandemic in their essential worker families and communities. 

A panel of experts explain what is happening and talk about what parents and others can do to avert another “pandemic”, that of future adults with serious emotional and mental disorders. 

Panelists include Angela Vasquez, MSW, policy director for mental health at The Children's Partnership; Dr. Ilan Shapiro, Pediatrician, chief medical affairs officer of Altamed federally qualified health centers, Los Angeles; Dr. Myo Thwin Myint, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Tulane University School of Medicine, He serves on the American Academy of Child and Adolescent (AACAP) Training and Education Committee New Orleans, Louisiana: and Sydney McKinney, PhD, Executive Director of the National Black Women's Justice Institute based in Brooklyn.
