The BA.2 variant is gaining ground, accounting for more than 50 percent of new infections in New York and New England, and almost 35 percent in California and elsewhere. This week’s roundtable news briefing will focus on:
How virulent is BA.2 compared to Omicron and Delta? Which populations are most at risk for infection, hospitalization, and death?
Should we return to mask mandates?
Will the call for a second booster for those over 50 mitigate some of the impact of the BA.2 variant? What about children, especially those under 5 who are not yet eligible for vaccinations?

Speakers discussed strategies to bridge the learning gap.
Speakers include Carlos Martinez de la Serna, program director -Protect Journalists; Ricardo Trotti, executive director - Interamerican Press Association; Ruslan Gruzhiy, Editor-in-chief -SlavicSac, Russian News in California; and Jeremy Goldkorn, editor-in-chief-SupChina.
All over the world, Journalists are being killed, intimidated, harassed, and imprisoned. According to the U.N. 55 journalists were killed in 2021. Eight journalists have been killed this year in Mexico alone. Access to the internet and social media is curtailed or reduced in many countries and disinformation and propaganda campaigns fill the platforms worldwide. In addition, public opinion about media and journalism are at an all-time low.
Speakers focused on press and information freedoms and the protection of journalists spoke about global trends and to discuss the appropriate responses to this dangerous situation.

TAGS' guest is, poet George Hammons. Join us as we talk poetry's connection to our humanity, Hammon's development as a poet growing up in Phoenix, as he reads a few of his poem.
Hammons was born in San Francisco, California. He lived for many early years in Phoenix, Arizona, during which time he spent most summers and holidays in Compton, California.
He eventually moved to Compton during his last two years of high school. He attended California State University at Fullerton, Rancho Santiago College and California State University and currently lives in Pomona, California, where he is working on multiple poetry projects. George has three adult children whom he loves ferociously and he believes that often it is the families that we choose (our friends) who shape us the most.
Hammons is brother of Phoenix artist and activist, Clottee Hammons. He is also the photographer of one of my favorite pictures of me, the black and white photo of me sitting behind the mic with my Kangol hat on.

During her tenure, Dr. Loretta H. Cheeks has helped organizations gain dynamic data insights serving enterprises, governments, and nonprofits.

Dr. Cheeks is on a mission to create a better world with technology. Before earning a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Arizona State University, the STEAM advocate was developing, deploying and leading various teams within the communications, avionics, instrumentation & control and chemical industries for Fortune 500 corporations. She is the first to identify a computational approach for the
discovery of news frames in unstructured text (e.g., online news articles).

She has demonstrated a unique ability to integrate communication theory and computer science methods to inform the fields of machine learning, psychology, and mass communication. But this Doctor of Philosophy isn’t just paving the way for up-and-coming engineers, Dr. Cheeks is also committed to improving higher education for underserved and underrepresented communities to follow in her scientific footsteps. To do that, Dr. Cheeks created “Strong TIES,” a non-profit.

She is listed among 10 Incredible Black Women In STEM, featured by Verizon on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, recognized as a Change Maker at the White House, and NASA Datanauts.
