Introduction
Have you ever tried to get someone a gift, but you know this person has almost everything you can think of? You really don’t know what you can you possibly get them. You’re faced with the dilemma of - what can I get this person? and you feel frustrated not knowing what to do. At some point in our lives, I think we all have gone through this issue. Now let’s think for a moment about God’s gifts. Have you asked yourself, why haven’t I received the gifts that God has offered us? Or maybe, you just don’t understand how to get these gifts.
The good thing about Jesus, is that he makes sure all our needs are met. It doesn’t matter if you are rich, poor, educated or uneducated. He sees us all as equal. No matter what your social status is, the one and most important thing you need to hear is that Christ died for all of our sins, and was raised from the dead. So, if you trust in Christ you can receive eternal life as a free gift. God’s desire for you is to have this gift of eternal life. The only way we receive eternal life is through Jesus Christ. This is what He says in John 14:6 “Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus tells Nicodemus, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” (John 3:3 NIV)
In John 4 we see the account of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Jesus intentionally, and in a metaphorical expression shows her she needs living water, that only He can give. Jesus is speaking of spiritual “water” or life-giving water providing eternal life. It is the same message he was giving to Nicodemus, but in a different metaphor. We obtain this gift of eternal life from Him and through Him.
Jesus is the living water that can give you eternal life.
In John 4:10 Jesus was intentionally asking this Samaritan woman for some water. At that time, ones being Jewish and speaking in public to a Samaritan was not the norm. This was a way to stir up curiosity in this woman. Jesus intention was to break through those religious and cultural barricades. His purpose was to help her rewrite her story with a new intimate perception of God. Today I want to stir up your curiosity and propose to you in this narrative the motivation for seeking and learning about the gift and the giver of Eternal Life.
The question at hand is: How can we get the Gift of Eternal Life?
* Realized the reward of knowing Jesus.
* Your reward: Eternal life.
When you come to Jesus he is as a spring of water that is “willing up to eternal
life.”
* Your Salvation: Knowing Jesus.
When you enter a personal relationship with Jesus and get to know him, both things and circumstances change. Your view on life changes. You no longer worry about your tomorrows. Your eyes are fixed on the giver of eternal life.
* All your needs will be met.
This Samaritan woman was trying to satisfy her needs. She had 5 prior husbands, and the one she was currently with, wasn’t her husband. She was trying to satisfy her needs. It wasn’t until she met Jesus, that things changed. He will meet all our needs, if we are willing to open our hearts.
* We just need to ask for it.
“Jesus answered her, “if you know the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10) How can we do it? When a person runs a marathon, they usually have people on the side of the road offering water. However, they get thirsty again after a few miles, causing them to ask for more water. The only difference between the physical run, in running a marathon and our run with Jesus is the Spiritual. God is a Spirit,
