On today’s Angela Box Show, Angela interviews longtime Houston conservative Orlando Sanchez, the GOP nominee for Harris County Judge – and the stakes could not be higher for Harris County taxpayers.
Orlando explains:
- How Harris County went from fiscally responsible government under leaders like Ed Emmett to a corrupt, far‑left circus under Lena Hidalgo and now radical “progressive” Letitia Plummer.
- His own record:
- Former Harris County Treasurer for 12 years, overseeing county finances with responsibility and transparency.
- Former Houston City Council at‑large member.
- Past mayoral candidate who once forced a historic runoff against a well‑funded incumbent with almost no money in the bank.
- Board member for a successful community bank, the University of Houston Foundation (managing roughly half a billion dollars for scholarships and endowments), and a major hospital corporation – decades of managing billions in public and private funds.
He contrasts that with his opponent’s record:
- Multiple citations from the Texas Ethics Commission for failing to file required reports.
- Loss of business charter from the Texas Secretary of State.
- Property tax defaults in Harris County.
- Sanctions from the Texas Dental Board for overcharging patients.
If a person can’t handle basic ethics and finances with their own businesses and patients, why should anyone trust them with billions in taxpayer dollars?
Orlando and Angela dig into key issues:
- Defunding the police & shutting down the police academy – Letitia Plummer pushed defunding HPD after George Floyd and wanted a new “citizen review board” despite the DA and Internal Affairs already investigating police actions.
- Decarceration of the Harris County Jail – she has openly talked about de‑incarcerating inmates at a time when crime is already out of control and “breaking bond” investigations show repeat offenders being cycled back onto the streets.
- Anti‑capitalist housing policy – proposals to tilt heavily against landlords and investors, punishing people who risk capital to provide housing and ultimately driving up costs and reducing affordability.
- Affordability and taxes – Orlando explains that most homeowners in Harris County now pay more in taxes and insurance than in principal and interest on their mortgage, because county Democrats have driven property taxes up for eight years straight.
They also talk flood control and basic competence:
- Voters approved $2 billion in flood control bonds in 2018. Many projects still aren’t implemented, jeopardizing millions in federal funding and leaving families at risk when FEMA flood maps keep expanding.
- The county hired an environmental engineer who “didn’t know hydrology,” and under her leadership flood projects stagnated until she finally resigned – putting affordability and safety in danger when homes flood that could have been protected.
On salaries and mismanagement:
- The Harris County Administrator – Sheila Jackson Lee’s daughter – reportedly makes around $411,000 per year.
- The Toll Road Authority director makes roughly $500,000 per year.
- Two unelected bureaucrats at a million dollars in salary between them – far above the pay of the President of the United States – while regular people struggle with eggs, milk, gas, and insurance.
Orlando lays out his vision:
- Restore fiscally conservative, responsible government that delivers for taxpayers instead of rewarding insiders.
- Work with Mayor John Whitmire (a Democrat but not a radical leftist) on crime, affordability, and infrastructure from a common‑sense standpoint.
- Use the bully pulpit of the Harris County Judge’s office to expose how Democrat commissioners are raising taxes, undermining public safety, and wasting public money – and rally moderate Democrats, Republicans, and independents who simply want good government again.
This race is not about party labels; it’s about whether Harris County will continue sliding into a Cook County / New York‑style fiscal collapse… or return to responsible, pro‑taxpayer, pro‑safety leadership
