In 1940, John Steinbeck, the author of Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath, chartered the fishing vessel Western Flyer. With his best friend, marine biologist Ed Ricketts, the author sailed to Mexico's Sea of Cortez on a six-week journey that yielded a pioneering book about the fledgling scientific disciplines of ecology and marine conservation. Seventy fives years later in February of 2015, a marine geologist with a life-long interest in Steinbeck and Ricketts, named John Gregg bought the Western Flyer. He then started the Western Flyer Foundation to specialize in merging the arts and science together in a holistic approach to learning and hopefully inspire the next generation of biologists, environmentalists, artists and researchers.

Derrik Chin is the founder and operator of Turista Libre, a tour company dedicated to sharing the magic of Tijuana, an often misunderstood border town. His clients are usually adventurous, open minded individuals more interested in a true cultural experience rather than another run of the mill tour. Matias Arjona’s entire life revolves around the sea, the vessels that float on it and the animals the live in it. He is a successful business man with roots that go back 4 generations working in and for the port authorities of Baja. Matias is just winding down a 6 year term as the secretary of Fish and Wildlife in the state of Baja and looking forward to handing over the reigns of Agencia Arjona, the family business, to his son in the near future. We caught up with Matias at the awards banquet for the 2019 SCORE Baja 500 right before he and his 19 year old son collected a trophy for winning their division.
