For this episode I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing a great friend, a lovely soul and the person who saved my eye-ball (seriously), Dr. Nailah Sint Jago. Nailah is also a client of mine who I coach and she is definitely someone who embodies the warm, friendly Antillean spirit. Not only is she my first female guest but also my first Aruban guest! So I had to ask her for her top recommendations on the island for those who want to visit! It's an incredibly beautiful island with a lot of soul and character. Definitely worth the visit!

I'm back! Unfortunately I haven't been able to upload episodes in the past week due to all the corona craziness. Not only did I have to take time to focus on my business but with the ongoing situation and measures it's hard to invite people over for a one to one interview. And trying to keep that up every week appears to be a bigger puzzle at the moment. So I am going to try to stick to a bi-weekly schedule! Every other week I will try to upload an episode! For this episode I invited an old school friend of mine, Percy Cicilia Jr, to come on the show. Percy is an African American Dutch Antillean. He is also a prolific dancer and dance teacher. But the reason I really wanted to talk to him was because he is already an activist and a social justice advocate. We had the opportunity to talk about his thoughts on the Black Lives Matters, racism and the ow so polarizing Sinterklaar/Zwarte Piet debate. We might have gotten a little carried away towards the end so just to be clear we are not against celebrating Sinterklaas, we just both believe it should be brought into the modern age in a graceful way.

For this episode I had the opportunity to have a chat with my big brother and two guys that I consider my brothers. We have known each other now for the majority of our lives and we have experienced many ups and downs together. Our childhood together shaped who we are and we are forever grateful. For this episode I wanted to take the time to explain and share why I started this podcast. What was the reasoning behind it and what I am trying to do with this project. It's mostly a means for me reconnect and connect deeper with my roots and heritage. It's my personal way of celebrating the culture and the people. In this episode I invited two of my closest and lifelong friends over to talk about our experiences moving to The Netherlands. Every summer it's custom, almost a bit traditional, for young students from the islands to move to The Netherlands to study and start a new chapter in their lives. Some come with SSC, some come with family and some come on their own. It can be a very daunting experience and for a lot of kids its their first time on their own in a strange country. So we shared some of our experiences, what we struggled with and we tried to give some advice for those starting their journey this yes. Big shout outs to my brothers Timothy Best and Graham Samson for taking the time to share and chat. I'm truly blessed that I had these guys here with me when I moved away from home.

For this episode I interviewed and chatted with my childhood homie and founding member of Asosiashon Mediko di Antias, Dr. Lung Jeung. Becoming a doctor already is no small feat. But then to also start an association to connect medical professionals and medical students from Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten. Growing up in an exceptionally musical family, music, dancing and cultural arts has always been a part of Michaels identity. I met him in high school as a super outgoing, capoeira dancing deadlocked breakdancer. Now we he is a musician, a dance teacher and a performer. Music and dancing is a big part of life on the islands and a primal part of our heritage. Michael and I spoke about his experiences and how he got to where he is now. Since we haven't seen each other in 13 years, we ended up also just catching up a lot and reminiscing about the past. I recently fined myself wanting to just chat and reminisce about growing up on the islands. Maybe it's a little home-sickness, maybe it's time for a little vacation, but regardless talking about the islands is fun. One of the reasons is that even though the islands are small, people still grow up and experience different things. One person who experienced his youth similarly to mine is my awesome big brother Chris Romijn a.k.a. Dookie. We talked about some of our favorite things on all 3 islands. We also shared our experiences growing up. Spoiler alert, it was the best. I'll be inviting my big bro over more often to just chat about island things.
