I gotta be honest, I didn’t think I’d be so bummed to see this series come to an end!
It was such a treat to spend so much time with Lindsay, chatting about so many different topics. Did you listen to the first four parts? They’ve been so good, right?!
(If you haven’t you might wanna check them out after you listen to this one.)
Well, I think we’re ending the series with the best one (but I might be a little biased), we went a little rogue, as Lindsay puts it.
Today’s episode is all about FAITH *cue George Michael singing: “I gotta have faaiitthhh”.
(Yikes, hope I didn’t just age myself too hard there...)
What you’ll get in this episode:
Why hearing the word “faith” is triggering for me
What faith means to Lindsay
Why belief and faith go hand in hand
Where I had to have faith in myself
How I handle the “Why does this always happen to me?” moments
Why it’s important to get curious about yourself and how you show up
Why it’s easier to feel like stuff is being done to you
Fault vs responsibility
Why we often look for people who confirm our insecurities
My aggressive tactic to push people away
Why it’s important to recognize that you have different seasons in your life
Why it can be confusing to know your role with clients when you’re behind the chair
Why you don’t have to justify anything in your life
How social media blurs the line of relationships
The “elephant in the room” situations
“You can open the door and if people walk through it, that’s amazing.” - another Lindsay Mayuga quote for your wall (am I going to open a shop of Lindsay Mayuga quotes…? Well… I guess I have my back up plan.)
“Nothing is anyone’s business”
There are so many chapters in your life
*Natasha Beddingfield’s “Unwritten” plays as we fade to black*
Oh my goodness! What an unreal 5 weeks it has been. I seriously had such a great time and I’m so thankful for Lindsay! Do you guys wanna see more of The Anxious Creative Makes Waves?
I’m so pumped that you came along for the ride (did you listen to all 5 or do you need to go back and listen to a couple?). I hope you had some laughs, some aha moments and just an all-around good time with Lindsay and myself, we truly had a blast recording these.
If you wanna keep up to date with Lindsay you can make sure to follow her on Instagram.
So until next time, as Lindsay says, “this isn’t goodbye, this is just a see ya later”.

Can you believe we’re on part 4 of The Anxious Creative Makes Waves? Have you been listening since part 1 (can you believe an entire month has already gone by since that episode came out?! This year is truly flying).
If you want to listen to any of the earlier parts to this series, you can pop over here to check them out.
This week’s episode is all about communication. Lindsay and I LOOOOOVE talking about communication.
So listen in to hear us communicate about communication! (It’s like inception but better.)
The gems you’ll get in this episode:
The reality show that Lindsay and I are planning
What your lack of communication might be saying
Why “common knowledge” isn’t always that common
Why communicating expectations is so important
A momentary lapse of the difference between American and Canadian accents
How experiences with poor communication have taught Lindsay and myself better communication
How custom consultations helped me with my communication
Why the way you communicate can attract the right clients
Why it’s important to repel the wrong people
Why the fear of being seen can be holding you back
Why it’s totally okay (and important!) to be yourself
My own personal evolution of self
A real-life example of my short attention span
The “cast of characters” of your life
Why it doesn’t matter what Pam thinks
Why being compassionate doesn’t mean resentment doesn’t exist
Why it’s okay to know that there’s a beginning and an end to everything
“What’s for you does not pass you.” - the Lindsay Mayuga quote that everyone needs on a t-shirt (or a mug)
Wow! Was that episode jam-packed or what? I can’t believe the finale is next week (“Can’t it go on forever, Dawn?!” I hear you cry)
Communicating hasn’t always been easy for me (have you read my blog post all about my sweaty pits?) and it’s taken me a while to be as comfortable with it as I am. So if you’re just starting to work on clearly communicating and it feels like an uphill battle, know that I’m cheering you on and I know you can do it.
I promise it’ll be so worth it.
You do not want to miss the final part of this series next Monday, when Lindsay and I are chatting all about faith.
I can’t wait!
Woooeee, get ready for another fun episode with Lindsay.
We’re onto Part 3 of our 5 part series The Anxious Creative Makes Waves. If you haven’t listened to part 1 or part 2 I’d definitely recommend going and checking those out. (They are seriously awesome, we talked about boundaries and worth).
This week we’re diving deep into all things money. (Did I just hear you take a sharp inhale? I promise, it’s not scary at all!)
In this episode you’ll get:
A very uncoordinated concert from myself and Lindsay (you can probably tell that we didn’t practice)
Why money is the perfect thing to learn after boundaries and worth
The real issue behind a “cash flow” problem
How your parent’s money mindset can influence your own
The skewed perspective most of us have surrounding money
It’s not about how much money you make, it’s how you spend it
The importance of having boundaries around money
How the scarcity mindset might be holding you back
How I found a way to throw away the extra money I made
Why short-term pain for long-term gain is worth it
Why Instagram and the “pretty pictures” might be sabotaging your dreams
Realizing that not everyone’s dreams are the same as yours
Lindsay’s top 3 tips about money
How great was that episode? I truly love talking about money (and I know it can be a bit of an uncomfortable) and Lindsay is such a whiz with worth and that ties so closely into money.
I hope this episode helped you to shift your money mindset and start rethinking the way you look at money.
Make sure to tune in next week when Lindsay and I talk all about communication!

Are you ready for part 2 of The Anxious Creative Makes Waves?
If you haven’t checked out part 1 yet, you should pop over and check it out! Lindsay and I talked all about boundaries.
Part 2 is all about worth and I’m so lucky to be hanging out with the Queen of Worth herself, Lindsay Mayuga. (She’s seriously so freakin’ awesome.)
Listen in to hear me do my best intro song to date (this is not a debatable statement btws).
Here’s what you’ll get in this episode:
- Why Lindsay believes worth is the foundation for everything
- Lindsay’s wake up call 3 years ago
- How to work in a way that lights you up instead of burns you out
- The 5 weeks that caused Lindsay to make a big change
- The mentality that may be causing you frustrations
- Why you might be feeding your ego instead of your worth
- My lightbulb moment
- Can people make you feel bad?
- Why it’s important to show up at work like your own best friend
- How to see and find your worth
- Lindsay’s biggest aha moments
- The perfect segue to part 3
Phew! That was such an awesome episode.
Lindsay seriously IS the Queen of Worth and I’m so pumped that I get to be along for her journey.
Make sure you tune in next week for Part 3!

Hold onto your seats cause I’ve got a fun series coming atcha!
I’ve teamed up with Lindsay Mayuga from the She Makes Waves Podcast for a 5 part series. Yup, you heard that right, over the next 5 weeks Lindsay and I are going to be chatting about business, life, being anxious creatives, and so much more.
I’m so excited to be bringing you Part 1 - it’s all about boundaries. (One of my all-time favourite topics, as you know.)
Here’s what you’ll get in this episode:
The WWDD (What Would Dawn Do) bracelet that Lindsay wants to make
Why open communication is a game-changer
The hardest lesson I had to learn
What the foxtrot and the tango have to do with boundaries
Why people-pleasers are often the most passive aggressive (or sarcastic)
How subtraction of yourself can lead to resentment
My favourite boundaries analogy (you mighta heard this one before ;-) )
How standing your boundaries can be not explaining them for certain people
Lindsay and I had so much fun recording this for you guys.
If you’re feeling frustrated and overwhelmed about implementing boundaries know that you’re not alone. It takes a lot of time and practice (and both Lindsay and I can vouch for that) and it doesn’t happen overnight.
Tune in next week for Part 2! (Spoiler alert: we’re talking all about worth - this is right up Lindsay’s alley.)

I’ve got a treat for you today! In this episode, I’m talking with Holly Luby from Thunder Bay, Ontario. (Coolest town name ever.)
Holly is a Rock Your Business alumnae, self-proclaimed control freak, and anxious creative. She’s been a stylist for 15 years, an educator for 8, and a business owner since February.
Yes, she started her salon business during the pandemic, and she’s succeeding! How is that even possible?!
You’ll learn all about it in this episode!
Here’s what else you’ll get:
Holly’s career path with all its twists and turns.
Some really fun ex-boyfriend drama stories (you’ll say “WTF?!” when you hear this one!).
Our shared nightmarish hair catastrophe story that almost made us quit the hair industry.
How Holly sidestepped her intense money fears and invested in Rock Your Business. (I definitely don’t recommend this method, but it makes for a funny story!)
How she worked through RYB and opened her business in a pandemic with two small kids at home.
The mindset shift that allows you to invest in yourself.
Some unexpected, beneficial shifts happening in our industry right now thanks to COVID.
How to deal when people don’t believe in you (again, and again).
The story of acquiring her salon and aaaaallll the obstacles that came with it.
Why obstacles can lead to the most amazing things. Don’t give up!
I am SUPER impressed with all Holly’s been able to accomplish in such a short time AND in the middle of a global crisis that’s had a massive impact on our industry. She’s such an amazing example of determination and perseverance.
I had such a great time chatting with Holly, and I know you’ll get a lot of out this episode too! For more Holly, follow her on Instagram at @hollyhairstylist and @inception.exclusive.salon!

This episode is FIRE.
Today, I’m talking to Lindsay Skinn, a Rock Your Business alumnae and kickass stylist who takes implementation to a whole new level.
I’ve had several guests from small towns on the podcast lately, and the theme continues with Lindsay! She lives on a dirt road and her house doesn’t have WiFi (she called into this episode from her salon!) and she’s proof that you can totally be a successful stylist in a town where it’s normal to see a horse and buggy ambling down the road.
One of the most amazing things about Linsday is that she actually grew her business during quarantine. The coronavirus pandemic has hit our industry hard, but Lindsay took that opportunity to switch things up and build a solid foundation for growth!
Here’s what you’ll get in this episode:
Lindsay’s story and how she pulled off such a massive career change from early childhood educator to hairstylist.
Why it’s CRUCIAL to find the right salon to work with you and help you grow.
How she made online courses work with no home WiFi, and what made her decide to invest. (Also, she joined in February back when we were all wide-eyed and hopeful about 2020. lol.)
The steps she took to grow her business during quarantine so she was ready to rake in the $$$ when she got back. (Plus how she made $2,000 from just TWO consultations!)
Major plot twist: How a stylist who’s allergic to hair color still found success. There’s always a way!
My secrets to growing a clientele from scratch (AKA how I was booked months in advance within 12 weeks.)
Tips for pricing services in a small town (and anywhere, really, but especially in a small town).
Why she decided to invest in RYB over other amazing programs.
Feeling like you belong in the industry (plus a bonus Backstreet Boys by Dawn song break).
I loved this conversation so much. I could have talked to Lindsay for hours! She’s a master of possibility and totally embodies the phrase “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” She completely redefines what’s possible as a small town stylist who’s allergic to hair color!
For more Lindsay, make sure to follow her on Instagram!
Sometimes, uncertain times offer amazing opportunities. Never give up! There’s always a way to grow.

Have I got a treat for you today!
In this episode, I’m talking to Molly Gee, an incredible salon owner, serial entrepreneur, and mastermind member who has done some ah-mazing things in the beauty industry!
Molly lives and works in Madison, Mississippi and she’s got the cool Southern accent to go with it! Madison’s not a big town (I know, I looked it up), and is yet another podcast guest who proves that you can kick butt as a salon owner in a small town.
Listen into our conversation to learn how she was able to do so much in her short time in the beauty industry.
Here’s what you’ll hear in today’s episode:
Molly’s incredible story and how she went from a New York fashion to assistant to bridal accessory maven to small town salon guru.
The massive challenges she faced as a business owner, and how she succeeded anyway. (These challenges, guys. Whew. Seriously, I teared up!)
Why it’s actually a good idea to be the big fish in a little pond, business-wise.
Why time and research are important ingredients for a successful business...just like courage and willingness to jump in!
We go off a little on the importance of quality hair products. Stay with us here.
How she was able to expand her business past her salon and create national reach.
I said it once and I’ll say it again: paying your dues is bullshit. Don’t wait for permission!
I love Molly’s story so much because she just decided what she wanted and went for it, despite major obstacles. She invested in her business, she found her community, and she grew.
In a nutshell, she lays out EXACTLY what it takes to grow a business in real life.
And I know you can do it too!

Today I’m so excited to chat with Livia, one of my students and a kickass stylist and business owner.
Get this: She graduated from hair school in 2018 and opened her first salon in 2019. AND she hired her first employee. She’s also quadrupled her income in the past two years, and she’s only 20!
To top it all off, she even lives in my hometown and we graduated from the same high school just a *few* years apart! (Okay, more like, 20 years apart...but I digress).
Livia is a master of taking massive leaps and doing business HER way, so I wanted to talk to her about how she managed to start on the right foot at such a young age, and in a small town.
Here’s what you’ll hear in this episode:
Livia’s journey and how she found the courage to take the leap into her own business.
How she handles the challenge of not being taken seriously as a salon owner because of her age.
What she’s doing differently from the typical small-town salon. (Like giving herself time off. Unheard of!)
Why “paying your dues” is bullshit.
The guilt of doing well (this is totally a thing).
A rundown of some of her most amazing business accomplishments. (This is totally possible for you too!)
Why consultations are the best thing ever (I can’t say this enough!)
How to stay open to opportunities so you can grow!
Plus lots of bonding over our hometown :)
I wish I could go back in time and hire Livia as my mentor when I first started out! It’s incredible what she’s been able to do in just two years of being a hairstylist. I love that she’s totally snubbing industry “norms” (like working yourself to death) because it’s made such a difference in her business growth!
If you get nothing else from this episode, I hope it’s this: you don’t have to do business the way everyone else does it. It’s okay to be different!

In this episode, I’m chatting with one of my incredible Rock Your Business alumni, Jodie Brown!
Jodie’s been a hairstylist for 15 years (or longer. She did her first foils at 11!). She’s also a brand strategist and Instagram educator for beautiful professionals who want to leverage their online presence to build a consistent brand and use Instagram without the overwhelm.
We first met virtually in the fall of 2019 when Jodie was experiencing the aftermath of a few really hard years. We clicked immediately, and she decided to sign up for my Rock Your Business! You’ll be blown away with how far she’s come since last fall.
So buckle up, because this is a good one!
Here’s what you’ll get in this episode:
Jodie’s story and the breaking point that led her to sign up for Rock Your Business.
The crazy serendipity of how we met, from Jodie’s perspective!
The REAL value of Instagram when it comes to growing your business. (And how she became an Instagram educator.)
The importance of allowing yourself to feel your pain without minimizing it.
Why I call bullshit on manifestation.
The glory of online booking and why you need it.
One of the biggest steps that moved the needle in Jodie’s business.
Why you need business buddies (and where you can find them!).
I say this all the time: It doesn’t matter what your life looks like on the outside. Success and fulfillment happen on the INSIDE, and that’s what I try to teach and facilitate in my courses and masterminds.
Jodie didn’t just create a life that looks good on the outside. (Though she definitely did that. Her Insta is gorgeous!) She created a life and business that supports her from the inside out, and you can do the same!
This episode is so inspiring, and I know you’re going to love it. Go say hi to Jodie on Instagram @itsjodiebrown! Make sure to grab the free goodies in her bio, and watch for her upcoming Instagram course and private coaching!
