In this episode I just wanted to relive a memory from about 10 years ago when I visited some countries around the Pacific Ocean and how amazing and awe inspiring it really was.

I’ve always enjoyed exploring the world and in my younger years was fortunate enough to travel around the world on a “Gap Year” so to speak in which, the journey took me to two amazing counties, specifically were many of the saltwater or “Marine” fish we get to enjoy today in our aquariums originate from, namely Fiji and Australia. These countries are more than famous for their vibrant fishes and coral reefs and some of the most visually and spectacular places to experience underwater.

Today I want to talk about a fish that most of us probably owned at the very beginning of our adventures in aquarium keeping. The goldfish.

Probably to many, the one fish that unfortunately has been so mistreated in its long history. From scientific testing to spending it’s day’s waiting to be won at a funfair, this fish has certainly been through the works but why and how come? Where did it all begin?

Did you know for instance that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England. Additionally, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety and depression) in any given week in England.

Do you ever stop in this hobby and think, how the hell did we get to this point? Well it happened to me recently, I noticed when browsing online at aquariums (as you do) that so many designs these days especially the display ones on the boxes are shown full of colour gravel and fake plants, it really dawned on me how far away the industry has gotten from where it started…..This led me down the rabbit hole to think, actually how did the hobby all begin and how long ago?
