Ordinary citizens, civil servants, pensioners, and big corporations will bear the brunt of France's €54 billion austerity budget. Unveiled on October 1, 2026, by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's administration, the highly controversial 2027 draft budget aims to stabilize a spiraling debt crisis that has reached €3.6 trillion (119% of GDP). The fiscal squeeze relies on a combination of €43 billion in new "recovery measures" and €11 billion from previously enacted curbs to drop the public deficit from 5.4% down to 5.0%.
