  • The Art of Medicine, Episode #7.5, Nonclinical Careers and COVID-19

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Michelle Mudge-Riley, MD, for speaking with me on this bonus episode of “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.” Michelle is the founder of PhysiciansHelpingPhysicians and has worked for 18 years to help physicians discover and pursue nonclinical careers. According to Michelle, one of the consequences of the Coronavirus pandemic is an uptick in physician interest in nonclinical careers.

Last year, Michelle held a very successful in-person conference with over 80 attendees. This year, she has organized three virtual conferences. The first conference, in July, will highlight the nonclinical and nontraditional career options available to physicians. The second, in September, offers in-depth information from physicians who have made the transition. The third, in November, will help physicians with the “how?” and offer a roadmap to get started. Conferences will include information on resume preparation, elevator pitches, interview techniques, as well as networking time. Physicians can register for one or more of the conferences.

Michelle kindly asked me to participate, and I’ll speak at the September Conference on locum tenens, a clinical but nontraditional career option for physicians.  Although I would prefer an in-person conference, the COVID-19 situation currently prohibits large groups. On the other hand, benefits of the virtual conference include lower registration costs, no travel costs, and “pajama attendance” if desired.

Many thanks to Michelle Mudge-Riley, MD, for joining me today on The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.

  • The Art of Medicine, Episode #7, Dr. John Jurica and Dr. Andrew Wilner discuss locum tenens

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

In this episode #7 of The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner, John Jurica, MD, an expert on nonclinical careers, interviewed me about locum tenens. John’s familiar with my book, “The Locum Life: A Physician’s Guide to Locum Tenens.”

We had a lot of fun and talked for over an hour! I started by defining locum tenens, explaining “The Locum Life,” and how to get your first assignment. We discussed the pros and cons of becoming an independent contractor, the role of a staffing agency, and the importance of flexibility. Flexibility applies not only to scheduling but to people skills as well. Finally, we discussed the “3 A’s of Success,” which can help locum tenens physicians succeed at every assignment. I hope you’ll agree that the discussion was lively and informative!

Our interview is also available as a video on YouTube. To locate the program, search, “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner” on YouTube.

We recorded our interview on April 3, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We discussed how COVID-19 has dramatically altered the practice of locum tenens regarding travel options and the types of available assignments.

John will also post his version of the recording on his regular podcast. I am looking forward to listening!

By the way, both John Jurica’s podcast and The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner were both included in the list of the “Top 20 Physician Podcasts You Must Follow”  by Feedspot!

Many thanks, John, for the opportunity to talk about The Locum Life, which helped me achieve work/life balance and advance my career.

  • The Art of Medicine, Episode #6, Dr. Andrew Wilner interviews Johanna Fox, CPA, CFP

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

In Episode #6 of the Art of Medicine, Dr. Andrew Wilner interviews Johanna Fox, CPA, CFP, the founder of Fox and Company CPAs. Johanna runs two sister companies-one provides accounting the other offers wealth management services.

A few years ago, I discovered Fox and Company CPAs while browsing the popular financial blog “The White Coat Investor,” where Johanna acts as a moderator. As a disclosure, since then, I’ve worked with Laura Clifford, CPA, an accountant with Fox and Company CPAs, and been a satisfied customer. However, I’ve never taken advantage of their wealth management services, in part because I didn’t really understand what they were. I decided to interview Johanna to learn more.

In this 15-minute interview, Johanna explains what “wealth management” really is and how it can help physicians. She describes the training necessary to become a certified financial planner (CFP) and how her firm has expanded to address the financial needs of her clients. She also emphasized that she works on a flat fee basis vs. the “assets under management” (AUM) approach of most financial planning companies. (The AUM model takes 1% or so, whether the portfolio grows or shrinks.) All of Johanna’s clients are physicians or dentists, so she understands their struggle for work/life balance and the financial planning challenges they face.

Johanna and I recorded this interview on April 2, 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johanna observed that some physicians, such as dermatologists and pediatricians, have seen their practices wither or even had to close their doors. Her firm tries to assist with these new and unforeseen financial crises. Johanna also lent some advice for those who have seen their net worth plummet due to the recent stock market nosedive.

Many thanks for Johanna for sharing her time and wisdom with us. Those interested in learning more about Johanna's wealth management and accounting services can reach her at: www.Fox-CPAs.com.

  • The Art of Medicine, Episode #4, Spiritual Aspects of Medicine

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Dr. Andrew Wilner interviews Rabbi Jeremy Simons, Assistant Rabbi at Temple Israel, Memphis, TN, about the role of the chaplain in modern medical care. We discuss the importance of spiritual healing and how difficult it is to measure. Rabbi Simons explained that visiting the sick is a Jewish tradition that goes back thousands of years. According to ancient texts, a thoughtful visit can relieve 1/60th of a patient’s disease burden. While not as effective as penicillin, there are many medical illnesses where any relief would be welcome. We also broached the topic du jour of Coronavirus and the role of a community rabbi in offering spiritual support for global, medical catastrophes.
