An award-winning director and writer, Hanelle M. Culpepper is known for her work in both television and film, including episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, Counterpart, The Flash, and Gotham. In directing the first two episodes of Star Trek: Picard, she has added to her list of accomplishments being the first woman to direct a pilot episode of a new Star Trek series.

Picard and the Romulans.

At the beginning of The Next Generation, the Federation and the Romulans had barely had any contact for more than 50 years. When attacks on their outposts lead the two sides to end their silence in “The Neutral Zone,” it’s Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise-D that encounter the Romulans first. From that point forward, Picard was an important figure in relations between these powers, and it appears he will continue in that role in Star Trek: Picard.

In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser talk about the various interactions between Picard and the Romulans. From their reintroduction in “The Neutral Zone” to the collapse of their government in Nemesis, the Romulans tend to meet the Federation with guile while Picard does his best to keep their machinations from spilling into open warfare. Picard as a Family Man.

When we were first met Jean-Luc Picard in “Encounter at Farpoint,” we were told—in no uncertain terms—that he does not like children. But, over the course of the series and Picard’s life, things changed. The Picard we saw in Generations seemed to long for a family and the comforts of a 19th-century Christmas at the vineyard.

In this episode of The Line, Brandon-Shea Mutala sets out to convince his fellow co-hosts, Justin Oser and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, that Picard really is a family man—though it doesn’t take a great deal of convincing. As we continue our look back on the themes in Picard’s life, we consider that he really does want a family and children, but circumstances have stood in the way.
