Stacie is an abstract painter who sees her making of her work as a performance through the creating of her abstract paintings. Stacie is passionate about the supporting of contemporary artist and is the founder of Unit 1 Gallery Workshop in Notting Hill. The gallery has been open for 5 years and hosts exhibitions and residencies for artists from all over the world. In the aim of the residency Stacie wanted to create a positive and supportive masters experience that she had at City and Guilds of London Art School. She also believes in helping the artist not only develop their practice while on the residency but to help and support artists in having a sustainable career through support. January 28, 2021Nettle GrellierIn episode 17 Anna is joined by artist Nettle Grellier, Nettle’s practice focuses on drawing and painting within the subject of portraiture and creating unique worlds. Nettle graduated from Her undergraduate at Brighton in 2015 and then moved to Spain where for two years she travelled around making work. In 2017 she set up a residency that supported emerging artists in making work on a farm in Spain. Nettle now finds that her paintings are very influenced by Spain from the landscape and arid colours where she will often use reds and yellows. Nettle is really interested in bring humour into her work and feels it is particularly important after the year of 2020, in her portraits you will often find a figure playing with a slug or flowers. Nettle is moving back to Cornwall where she is going to take herself on a drawing residency to draw new inspiration for her work. She also has a duo exhibition at Blue Shop Cottage alongside Plum Cloutman opening in 2021. January 21, 2021Rose ShuckburghRose Shuckburgh is a Bristol based artist who’s work is inspired by the Welsh Landscape and her personal connection to the landscape. Rose works in watercolours to create abstract paintings on handmade paper, these paintings are very subtle in their tones that create rich paintings. Rose is also really interested in standby stones and the myths behind them, there is a stone circle where apparently women were dancing in a Sunday and were turned to stone. Rose has recently started to incorporate film and photography into her practice - through capture the welsh landscape and human interactions. One of Rose’s biggest inspiration is Barbara Hepworth and more recently she is really drawn to Mary Herbert’s work. January 14, 2021Rafaela De AscanioFor episode 15 Anna is joined by the London based sculpture and painter Rafaela De Ascanio. Rafeala makes coil puts and abstract oil paintings, within her work she looks to create worlds which are inspired by sci fi, art history, the plants and performance art. She studied a Foundation at CSM and then went onto study Art History at the Courtauld, she feels that her time studying Art History actually took her away from her practice which she has now come back to making art. As a child she lived on the Canary Islands, but for years didn’t go back however when she was pregnant she felt this desire to return to her home and to where her family are from. She is inspired by the mixtures of cultures, festivals and landscapes. The colours of the island you can often see mirrored in her paintings where she creates these unique worlds. Rafaela is currently exhibited in Back To Back with Nettle Griller by Bowes Parris Gallery and is co curated by Anna Woodward and Cassandra Bowes. December 31, 2020Tuesday RiddellIn this weeks episode Anna is joined by Tuesday Riddell a London based painting who focuses on the painting practice of Japanning. Tuesday studied BA Fine Aft at City and Guilds of London Art School where she focused on painting, however after her BA she felt that she had not found her grove in her own practice. In 2017-18 won a scholarship from the Paint Stainers Guild to a fellowship at City and Guilds focusing on traditional painting practices. This is where Tuesday learnt about japanning and was the most influential period of learning for her practise. In Tuesday’s work she creates worlds of naturally beauty filled with animals, landscapes and plants. From a young age Tuesday has always been really interested by nature and as a child used to try to collect butterflies to play with. December 24, 2020Beatrice Hasell MccoshJoin Anna chatting to Beatrice Hasell Mccosh, Bea is a London based artist who recently had a solo show at Blue Shop Cottage and curated All These Gestures a group show for Bowes-Parris Gallery. All these Gestures was an online exhibition that investigated artists process alongside final pieces. Due to lockdown curators Bea and Cassandra used social media to really engage viewers with the exhibition and artists practice. Bea is really inspired by tapestries and nature and often finds her colour palette is influenced by her childhood spent growing up in the Lake District. Colour is really important to Bea and she has spent time looking into colour theory and the influences of different colours on your mood. Bea then applies this to her large scale abstract paintings working in oils and building up the layers....more47minPlay

This autumn they have co curated 13 back to back solo shows of contemporary emerging artists in London and have also had shows virtually scanned to increase accessibility, which is particularly important at the moment with less people being able to travel to exhibitions. Both Jacob and Ellie believe strongly in supporting and championing under represented emerging artists, breaking down barriers. December 10, 2020Victoria Canton and Xu Yang with Joséphine Bailey and Anna WoodwardIn episode 11 Anna is joined by artists Victoria Cantons and Xu Yang and is also joined by curator and art historian Joséphine Bailey. Learn more about Victoria and Yang’s practise and how they respond and influence to each other’s work. The artists met at Wimbledon Art School while both studying their BA and soon became friends through sharing a studio together. Victoria is an incredibly creative individual having been an actor and musician before coming to art, which she feels is her best outlet. But is still very inspired from the other creative disciplines. Yang grew up in a small town in China in a very conservative up bringing, as a child she was drawn to fairy tales and unicorns as a form of escapism. Yang came to London to explore drag culture and was particularly drawn to the beauty and the way people can use make up to transform themselves. Kim graduated from City and Guilds of London Art School in 2019. Kim’s work references art history, erotica, self portrait through the abstraction of the human body. Kim sees herself as a painter and was most inspired by Roy Oxlade’s exhibition. Whilst studying Kim set up Assemblage, an artist run magazine for artists, she most enjoyed interviewing Gordon Cheung who was the first person she interviewed for the platform.
