July 22, 2022106. Protecting your mental health immediately after a stressful event in nursingNursing is a beautiful profession, but it is also a stressful one. We are supporting people often at the lowest point in their lives, or at the end of their lives. That is not an easy burden to carry every day. On top of that, stressful and traumatic events (codes, rapid responses, withdrawing care, patient deaths, falls) are fairly common occurrences. So today, I want to talk about a few key things to practice after a stressful event to help yourself recover, at least a little bit, so that you can get back to your other patients. Unfortunately, nursing doesn't stop when things go wrong, on the contrary, it can move even faster. So I hope to help you build up your toolbox so that you can support yourself and protect your mental health in and outside of the hospital. July 18, 2022105. No experience? No problem! Becoming a nurse with no experience in healthcareI remember starting nursing school with ZERO healthcare experience, and watching my classmates coast through the material, already having a solid base of knowledge. I felt totally behind and overwhelmed trying to catch up. I also felt this same overwhelm when I transitioned into the Cath Lab with ZERO cardiac experience. Back to square one. If that resonates with you in any way, then this episode is for you. We chat about how to adjust if you have no experience, why it could actually help you in the long run, and a few tips to help you overcome the challenge. Trust me, you've got this! July 11, 2022104. How nurses can craft better questions without feeling "stupid"Asking questions as a new nurse or student can feel intimidating at first. We are often afraid to interrupt care or "get in the way." We can also be afraid to look "stupid" or ask things we "should" know the answer to, especially when we are paired with nurses who are less than supportive. On this episode, we discuss these common barriers, but also tactical tips on how to grow your confidence with this practice and ask better questions in general. Asking questions is a VITAL part of your growth as a nurse since this profession requires lifelong learning. So let's abolish this fear that is often associated with admitting when you do not know. After all, you will never gain the knowledge if you never ask. Follow along and join the Nursing Co-op community on Instagram @ashley_nursingcoop and on Facebook in The Nursing Co-op Huddle! June 29, 2022101. [WW] Add this practice to your exercise routine to AMPLIFY your results! This week, we are breaking down the benefits of time under tension and focusing on slowing down during your resistance training. So many of us are only focused solely on calories burned that we blow through our workouts and try and get each movement done as quickly as possible. The reality is that SLOWER is truly the way to FASTER growth. Growth in terms of efficiency, building lean muscle, improving form, mastering complex movements, and getting strong. As an added bonus, slowing down will also decrease your risk of injury and improve recovery time. That is pretty powerful if you ask me. June 16, 202298. [WW] There is no GROWTH without resistance: A metaphor from the Biosphere 2This week, we have a pep talk style conversation inspired by the Biosphere 2. Sounds out there, I know. But I think you will vibe with this idea. The Biosphere is essentially an artificial, controlled environment built inside of a dome which includes various types of ecosystems. It is designed for research and experimentation, and one piece of information that they discovered upon its inception was all about TREES! The trees planted inside of the sphere would grow to a certain height and then topple over. After investigating, researchers discovered that the trees needed wind in order to properly grow and develop, otherwise they were too weak to survive. As you can imagine, this can be a powerful metaphor for the human journey. Lets talk about it!Follow along and join the Nursing Co-op community on Instagram @ashley_nursingcoop and on Facebook in The Nursing Co-op Huddle! We would love to see you there!
