'Land banking' can produce returns for investors but comes with significant red flags. It is often unregulated, leaving investors without protection if things go wrong. Mr Jayaweera’s former clients were at or near retirement age. He invested their superannuation money into a scheme, an abalone farm, without their knowledge. The abalone farm was then wound up by receivers and liquidators, with no available returns for investors.
